Polls - Bottle of wine poll down, SCUMM poll up

We're halfway the month again, a few days late, all the more reason to change the poll at once! Prior to presenting the new poll, let's have a look at the outcome of the Bottle o' wine poll from June/July. With whom would you like to sit on a terrace and have a drink, celebrating the 25th anniversary of MSX? After a whopping 1039 votes, here is the result:
  1. Kay Nishi 19.54%
  2. Wammes Witkop 19.15%
  3. Someone else 16.84%
  4. Hideo Kojima 15.40%
  5. Bill Gates 14.73%
  6. Martos 14.34%
MSX architect Kay Nishi has won, but very closely followed by former MCM chief editor and MCM/MCCM publisher Wammes Witkop. So close that maybe Wammes would've won had the poll been online a few days more or less. In any case, both Kay and Wammes are of course respectable MSX giants!

Let's get straight towards the next poll! Over the years we have seen all kinds of game genres on MSX, but one popular genre still seems to be missing: the point 'n click adventures, such as the SCUMM(tm) games from LucasArts. There is a reasonable chance that you have once played the swashbuckling Monkey Island series or the hilarious Day of the Tentacle. In addition, the first SCUMM game Maniac Mansion showed that this particular genre didn't require rocket science, as it did run on a Commodore 64. Why wasn't there a point 'n click adventure for MSX, or why wasn't SCUMM ported to MSX yet, even if it had to be a high-spec MSX?

The poll question of this month is thus a simple one: do you ever expect to see a point 'n click adventure on MSX? This doesn't necessarily have to be a game in a ported SCUMM system, it may also be a completely new engine, as long as it has similar ingredients as the popular SCUMM games. Is there still hope, or should we accept that point 'n click on MSX will never be? Point 'n click your poll choice!

If you have an idea for a interesting poll, send your idea to poll@msx.org and we will consider running your suggestion for a month.

There was: Zoo.

From a SCUMM point of view, ZOO was more of an advanced Spy Story, if you ask me. ZOO is not the SCUMM-style Point 'n Click I'm referring to.

Don’t forget Infogrames’ L'Affaire… and Les Passagers du Vent (De Kinderen van de Wind) .

I played point-and-click games on MSX a lot! Titles such as Les Passagers du Vent, L'affaire and ZOO are favs of mine!!

There is also Murder on the Mississipi, too bad it's all in Japanese

There was also 'De Fabriek' (The Factory) made by two guys from Groningen... Eme and Albert if I remember correctly. Had some cool Grunn' accent spoken PSG noise at the beginning. Never got to finish it, as I always mysteriously died. Fun game though, I should look it up again sometime -- I found it's not listed at Generation-MSX, but I have it somewhere in my dusty disk archive!

I really hope we'll see SCUMM on MSX. Especially a port of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, imo the best game ever made independent on platform or genre

And the WINDIMATION games weren't that far from those LucasArts' games. I mean KNIGHT TYME and STORMBRINGER. They are really huge and have plenty of actions and options, but I must admit that they are not so appealing from the graphical point of view. But hey, if that can be done with 64 KB and without multiloading, I guess that almost anything can be done in a big megaROM. The problem is - of course - that such a game would need a massive development time.

Zak mc Kracken i think could be done on msx2.Now about Monkey Island,if there has been a hercules version monochrome only i think it could be done too.

Since a c64 has a c6502 processor that is about 1mhz (? i think?) and msx has a z80 3,58 mhz i think procesor speed is not an issue.

Now i guess it would need massive developement and lots of time for such a game.Lucas arts had the best programmers and designers back then.

But right now we have more tools and more knowledge so who knows?
