Games & Demos - Cow

NYYRIKKI, whose output is usually unpredictable yet fascinating, has competed in the Alternative Party 2008 with his demo Cow. This demo, which requires a turbo-R to run, ended up second place! As of today it has been added to scene/demo-database Pouet.

Damn you guys are fast!

This demo was compeating in dynamic demo serie, where idea is that every time the demo is started, it looks different.

Some more details: This demo requires MSX tR, 512KB RAM in primary mapper and modern MoonSound (128KB is not enough...)

I hope I will soon release a bit updated version... Now for example there is no hardware check at all and the dynamic part dissappears after first run.

How ever this demo was first peace of MSX code that I've made that actually was worth of money. I actually won 150€ +misc. stuff like free tickets & PC-hardware.

Unfortunately currently there is no emulator that could run this demo 100% correct, but OpenMSX and BlueMSX do quite a good job.

I'm trying to run it in openMSX, but I get: Syntax error in 130. What am I doing wrong? I used a GT with MoonSound (640kB as is default).

EDIT: hmm, it seems to help to use a DOS1 disk... (openMSX uses a DOS2 disk by default when using dir as disk...)
EDIT: I guess it needs DOS1 to be present to work... (just boot the turboR with the '1'-key pressed.)

What exactly isn't emulated correctly?
By ARTRAG on November 01 2008, 20:32
on my TR A1GT it hags just after the printing

"Loading..."

any hint on the reasons?
By NYYRIKKI on November 01 2008, 20:55
@manuel: It runs on DOS2 only if you run "MAP2" first... and fix the blink reg bug on OpenMSX to see <-- blink

@ARTRAG Seems like MoonSound problem to me...

Congratulations!!!

Cool! Just to check, to play this demonstration program I will need two extra "4-bit Memory" chips (along other items) plus a
MoonSound cartridge?

Maybe I should need more nice stuff and better informations ...

Any chance of getting a youtube vid of this? (captured from a real turbo-R, not emu output)
By ARTRAG on November 01 2008, 23:17
Well, I do not have moonsound...
Any way to run it in a plain TR?
By manuel on November 01 2008, 23:57
Just buy one at Sunrise Or use an emulator after all.
By NYYRIKKI on November 02 2008, 00:23
Trust me, this demo is not worth of buying any new hardware.

I know that there are plenty of people, who like to say this should be made on standard MSX2, 512KB memory is too much to ask etc. etc.

How ever... I think that if no one uses the features that has been made available for us, no one will never use them. If you don't make anything for any MSX model, then don't be so hard for people who do... Although I didn't take the hardest way...

I know that this hardware could do much better, but my skills & personal life was this time the limitation.

NYYRIKKI - when is the blink effect visible, exactly?

EDIT: ah, I think it's in the graphical loading screen, right?
By dvik on November 03 2008, 23:16
NYYRIKKI - Is this the screen 5 blink bug you also reported on blueMSX?
By NYYRIKKI on November 04 2008, 08:26
@manuel & dvik: Yes. You should see the disk twist to both directions.
By NYYRIKKI on November 04 2008, 08:55
... I think you can think the functionality of blink in graphic modes pretty much same as EO bit of reg 9... It has just blink timing instead of one frame timing. How ever please note that these functions can be used at same time to enable / disable EO functionality automatically for blink perioid.

dvik: At the moment I how ever find it much more disturbing that the DRAM mode in MSX tR emulation is still broken in BlueMSX. In this case if I for example execute MAP2 after boot before changeing CPU mode to ROM the tR will be totally messed up.

NYYRIKKI (and anyone else, e.g. ro!), you can try out the fix in the latest snapshot, temporary URL:
http://openmsx.sourceforge.net/temp/openmsx-0.6.3-dev8338-win32-bin.exe

Feedback is most welcome!
By NYYRIKKI on November 05 2008, 07:33
Yes, I did some tests and now it seems to work correctly... Thanks, you guys are fast!
By manuel on November 05 2008, 22:32
Great! The change was actually only one line of code... (We have to thank Wouter that he picked this up so quickly...!)
