Almost exactly a year ago we
reported about ESE MSX, a one-chip MSX prototype developed by
Tujikawa. A year later, the project has advanced a lot. Newly added features are:
- MSX2 compatibility (the site mentions MSX1, but an YS2 screenshot proves otherwise. Probably MSX2 isn't fully compatible yet, while MSX1 is)
- Cartridge slot allows you to play game cartridges
- An MMC memory card can be used as if it was a Mega-SCSI harddisk. Even virtual floppy disk emulation works.
.The system is still highly extendible, allowing you to add new features (like FM-PAC emulation) or to upgrade the BIOS.
It is not sure at this moment what role this one-chip device will play in the future one-chip MSX plans of the
MSX association. However, since the previous ESE MSX was even presented as a prototype on the
MSX Festival this new version might very well be used in the future as well.
