MRC Bounce Challenge: 14th entry by TNI

Challenges - MRC Bounce Challenge: 14th entry by TNI

 Tuesday, October 12, 2004 - 11:03

 Topic: Challenges

Last night TNI completed their entry to the MRC Bounce Challenge. TNI's Bounce 2004 demo starts as an ordinary logo and scroll demo. But then... things get really bouncy! This MSX2/MSX-MUSIC demo is certainly worth watching completely.

As the TNI Bounce entry was received after 3:00 CET and before 12:00 CET the entry will be judged by ANMA for winning a prize, but it will receive a one point penalty for missing the deadline of the challenge. For people still working on their bouncy bits, you've got 1 hour left to complete your entries.

Damn.. How does that trick work!!!
Very very very very nice Guyver!
By wolf_ on October 12 2004, 13:44
ah.. thank you for keeping me sharp .. I nearly forgot about that scrolltext-trick
By NYYRIKKI on October 12 2004, 14:10
Something old and something new. Very nice effect, but those colors of the scroll text cause migraine. :-)
By Sonic_aka_T on October 12 2004, 14:42
I wonder if the programming n00bs appreciate how insanely difficult this 'trick' is... You're mixing SCREEN 4 and SCREEN 8 right? Would the scroller be sprites then? That would make sense and is about the only way I can explain all this... Very cool! Very Impressive!
By NYYRIKKI on October 12 2004, 15:08
Oh, that was screen 8! That explains the horrible colors. :-)

Nice job guys,
i realy enjoyed the demo!!!!
Congrats!
By Maggoo on October 12 2004, 20:03
Excellent ! The best technical bouncing I've seen in years

By ccfg on October 14 2004, 18:11
Really impressive multilayer bouncing, not forgetting the excellent bouncing dot!
The music is nice, although it becomes a bit repetitive.

By snout on October 14 2004, 22:00
Time was our enemy in this project The music could have done with a lot more variation and the way the demo could have been more polished, but in the end I'm very proud of the result.

Now that openMSX 0.5.0 is out, openMSX users can finally enjoy this demo the way it's meant to. (earlier versions had a display bug that was really apparent in this demo)

good to see new MSX software also help building better emus
By BiFi on October 21 2004, 07:59
Yeah, I have a version of Sphere now that runs too slow on an emulated MSXturboR compared with the real thing.
By dvik on October 21 2004, 08:27
BiFi, Did you try both openMSX 0.5.0 and the blueMSX beta? On which emulator (or both) was it too slow? Since I don't have a TR it's hard for me to try. But I'm very interested in trying your version so the emulators can be made better.

By BiFi on October 21 2004, 09:14
I tested it with build 12225 and even on that it's not synced correctly. Same goes for openMSX 0.5.0. I'll make the disk(s) available to both development teams so the speed can be fixed. Honestly, I was quite stunned when I noticed the speed of the R800 is faster than the speed currently emulated. I'll give you more info with the URL to the disk(s).

BiFi: That would be great. Thanks

GuyveR800: I played around a bit with oversampling on the OPLs. With 8x oversampling on the MSX-MUSIC and MSX-AUDIO chips, the sound is a lot better I tried with aleste as you said and there is definately a notable difference. But when playing the UR demo the difference between current emulation and oversampled version is quite big. At the moment I'm in the middle of another bigger change but I'll have a beta ready in mid next week. Just send me a mail if you want to try it.
By GuyveR800 on October 21 2004, 13:41
Nice work, dvik!
One thing though, doesn't 8X oversampling get really slow? Not that it really matters, because it's a quality feature, and IMHO quality can be traded for speed.
Unfortunately I don't have time to test betas, but I'm glad my suggestion has led to improvements ^_^
By dvik on October 21 2004, 18:00
Oversampling gives a more dynamic sound and less noise but there is of course a cost. 8x oversampling makes the CPU usage go up three times (in blue) when running Unknown Reality. It is about the same for the moonsound oversampling.

Everything I've tested so far runs fine on my 2GHz centrino laptop with XP with up to 16x oversampling.

I'll make the oversampling factor be configurable individually per OPL as well as the oversampling factor.
