| | MRC Under Water Challenge |
| | Monday, March 29, 2004 - 23:35 Submitted by: Latok Topic: Challenges | | Here we go again! You all remember our Snowfall Challenge. With many cool prizes and an independant juror, Wammes Witkop, the challenge turned out to be a huge success, resulting in 25 new MSX demo's in just 6 weeks. Now, the time has come to launch the sequel: The MRC Under Water Challenge!
The purpose of the Challenge is to create a game, a demo, a song and/or a drawing based on the theme 'under water'. Be creative! You need a few hints? Fish! Shipwrecks! This game! Anything goes, just as long as it applies to the 'under water' theme.
As for system requirements: you are free to use anything ranging from an unexpanded MSX1 with 16kB RAM to a fully-equipped MSX turboR with 512kB RAM, GFX9000, 512kB Moonsound and IDE/CompactFlash. Of course you are also allowed to support the MSX-MUSIC, MSX-AUDIO or SCC sound chips.
Oh, you want prizes as well? Although we are not planning to give away prizes each challenge (not unless we get some serious donations ), we think this challenge is big enough to reward the efforts with the following prizes: - Hydlide 3 MSX2 version
- XAK 2
- Ancient YS Vanished
If you want to join the challenge, be sure to send your submission(s) in before May 15th, 23:59 CET to blub@msx.org. Needless to say, you are allowed to send in more than one submission. Thanks to Patriek Lesparre for suggesting an aquarium challenge on #msxdev.
Of course we are already looking for an independant juror who would like to judge all the submitted files like Wammes Witkop did last time. We already have someone special in mind. Just keep track on our website as we will announce his (or her) name soon. |

| By [D-Tail] on March 30 2004, 01:16 | Really a cool thing! /me is starting to code right away
Be seeing you!
| | |
| By BiFi on March 30 2004, 08:00 | Yeah... People, let's see how we can really wet our MSX' es without throwing water over it or it into the water!
| | |
| By d-fader on March 30 2004, 09:42 | I'll be happy to be the independant jury!
| | |
| By [D-Tail] on March 30 2004, 10:30 | That water throwing doesn't seem a very good idea to me...
| | |
| By wolf_ on March 30 2004, 10:38 | yeah.. it would result in a turbo eRror
| | |
| By BiFi on March 30 2004, 11:59 | btw... Latok, I'm not sure but have the policies changed about using smileys in newsposts?
| | |
| By ro on March 30 2004, 12:45 | I had the same impression... previously I could use the (non capital 'p') but now I have to use capital 'P' to have the same effect.
| | |
| By snout on March 30 2004, 15:10 | That was not what BiFi was referring to, afaik.. however... what about the CHALLENGE!!! Are you going to join in this time, Ro?
| | |
| By ro on March 30 2004, 15:50 | hmm, dunno. Guess not.. lazy u know.. gheh. unless you throw in your sister at the pricelist.. whoahaha. (kiddin')
| | |
| By POISONIC on March 30 2004, 18:18 | nice!
but i can not program so good
| | |
| By wolf_ on March 30 2004, 18:31 | then read the newspost again ..
| | |
| By wolf_ on March 30 2004, 18:53 | which leads to a question, how do the judges judge when the contributions differ?
How does a good picture stand competition against a good demo, or a good song ?
| | |
| By snout on March 30 2004, 19:14 | We will leave that up to the judges
| | |
| By [D-Tail] on March 30 2004, 21:38 | Personally I think pictures don't stand a chance *unless* they are REALLY brilliant. A demo consists mostly of >1 pictures . Same concerning music. However my snowfall challenge attempt didn't include any music .
| | |
| By Latok on March 30 2004, 21:47 | People, it's not about winning, huh. It's about having fun creating something on MSX and being able to let others enjoy your achievements
| | |
| By [D-Tail] on March 30 2004, 23:25 | The latter is very true... That's why we all participate!
| | |
| By wolf_ on March 30 2004, 23:26 | well, it's not about winning prices.. but what's wrong with a lil bit of a competitive element ?
| | |
| By GuyveR800 on March 31 2004, 01:13 | Nothing wrong with competiveness, but not entering because 'you dont stand a chance' is not a positive attitude.
| | |
| By ro on March 31 2004, 09:18 | So euh, if say Wolf, I and some other GFX artist besides me (yeah, I did all fuzz drawings in the past) team up again and have this ultra cool and original demo with ultra cool sound and ultra cool images... we could end up have the most-ultra-price-winning entry of them all?
There should be some seperate (sub) compos as in: best coding, musx, sound and/or production. .. . or sumpf'n.
(phat change I will enter the compo, but still)
| | |
| By wolf_ on March 31 2004, 10:42 | well Ro, you know how to reach me.. have some nice never-seen ideas already..
| | |
| By snout on April 01 2004, 00:42 | I challenge Ro and Wolf to do the MAGIC. Come on guys, you can do it... show it! It's -coooooooooooool-!! Judging the thing will be our challenge
| | |
| By ro on April 01 2004, 07:43 | yeah, but only 6 weeks to enter?? man, thaz way too little time these years (yeah, in the earlier days we could code over weekend (e.g. muzax 2).. but thaz when we we're young)
| | |
| By wolf_ on April 01 2004, 09:55 | You'd think that with the years ppl gain experience, so that development would be faster
Too much beer will kill ya, anytime
| | |
| By BiFi on April 01 2004, 11:59 | Com' on, let them Fuzz ressurrect from its grave and show what you guyz still can do!
| | |
| By wolf_ on April 01 2004, 12:12 | and Ro, stop whining about you being busy, just get crackin'
| | |
| By snout on April 01 2004, 14:09 | Yeah, since you're only busy with stating that you're busy
The snowfall challenge was done in 6 weeks time, 25 demo's were the result... I see no reason why an experienced coder like you (who already has an all-purpose kernel lying around) would not make it in 6 weeks.
| | |
| By ro on April 01 2004, 15:03 | ..wait untill you've read the compo plot we have in mind.. (no thanx to Wolf who, again, is spitting out ideas faster than I can finish my beer)
Well, I've talked to Wolfman about it and we'll see... I'm too bussy doin' nothing.. uhu, not! (really, if you'd only know.. pfff. it's time to get a good MSX emu on my JOB's desktop to be able to do some more stuff I'm not supposed to do during workhours)
...ah, well...bubble bobble babble...
| | |
| By [D-Tail] on April 01 2004, 22:03 | Get an A1ST... And a life!
You start sounding like me, what with the beer and all
| | |
| By ro on April 02 2004, 07:34 | Dude-tail: I got a life (and a fs-a1st... already damn)
what I don't have: Spare time to code, a million dollar, cheesecake, a descent house to call home, inspiration and ofcourse a pare of nifty boobs to play with (ok, my girl's got a few but I want my own, grr!)
| | |
| By snout on April 02 2004, 17:07 | Hmm there still is no definite 'yes' or 'now' on the question: Are Ro and Wolf going to join this challenge as a team???
| | |
| By snout on April 02 2004, 17:08 | 'now' wasn't a typo. I'm waiting for your entry, guys. You have no choice!
| | |
| By wolf_ on April 07 2004, 21:31 | so uhm.. exactly what is allowed and what not ?
Create a picture on PC (think raytracing etc.) and convert it to screen 7 .. is that a valid picture contribution ?
| | |
| By GuyveR800 on April 07 2004, 23:30 | That's what people call 'cross-development', isn't it... So that would be a valid entry.
| | |
| By wolf_ on April 14 2004, 15:38 | Ro & I are off ... not enough time for the ideas that were on the drawingboard.
| | |
| By Latok on April 14 2004, 16:09 | You can use whatever platform you want to create. The entry is valid as long as it runs on an MSX computer. Of course, creating gfx on pc and converting to MSX will probably not been given many points, but it's permitted.
And erhm, Ro & Wolf? You're no sissies, are ya? Skip an idea or two, participate and show us how to kick ass.
| | |
| By wolf_ on April 14 2004, 16:28 | It's about the available time for it.. Ro doesn't have much of it.. I have some more time, but the concept is too big for the 5 weeks that are left.. (the concept wan't exactly a scrolltext and a picture and I need to make a major developing-tool first)
| | |
| By d-fader on April 15 2004, 14:20 | What was the idea then? Maybe someone can still participatre using your ideas
...though I get the idea not a whole lot of entries will be made this time...
| | |
| By wolf_ on April 15 2004, 15:27 | Well, since I might turn the concept a bit inside-out for a possible next challange, I'd not reveil too much about it.. it's just not the typical demo for an 8-bit computer
I fear that lack of time is a major problem for many ppl. The snowfall-deadline was in the xmas holidays... that was good, since most ppl are most active around the deadline
| | |
| By Latok on April 15 2004, 16:58 | We don't expect as many entries as last time, of course not. But that doesn't mind at all. We know several teams are busy creating stuff and that kicks major ass.
