MRC moves to dedicated webhosting

MSX Resource Center - MRC moves to dedicated webhosting

 Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 21:59
 Submitted by: snout
 Topic: MSX Resource Center

As of today the MSX Resource Center is hosted from a dedicated webserver in Germany. Due to increasing downtime and slowdowns at our previous ISP and other bad experiences with shared webhosting, we decided to take the next step: a single webserver completely dedicated to hosting the MSX Resource Center, fully customizable to our own needs.

At the moment DNS servers around the world are updating their DNS records. MRC should be fully available and operational within 48 hours. Thanks for your patience.

I'm quite curious: how's the new webserver's speed @ your location? Improved? About the same? Or is it slow as $(#*($*#?
By mars2000you on March 20 2005, 22:06
It seems a little faster
By Grauw on March 20 2005, 23:07
Same.
By Grauw on March 20 2005, 23:07
(as in: it seems a little faster too)
By spl on March 20 2005, 23:48

*If* there's a difference, then I can't notice the difference between
time
and
time*1.001

By Sonic_aka_T on March 21 2005, 00:41
odd, 'cause it seems to be quite a bit faster over here...
By Edwin on March 21 2005, 00:43
Personally, I'd say it's more than just a little faster. Response to forum pages is at least twice as fast as earlier in the day.

It doesn't show the msx.org url in the location bar though. Maybe cache issues with the reverse DNS.
By snout on March 21 2005, 00:45
Thanks for all the positive response so far. At least no one has reported the site being slower yet . The URL in the adress bar will change as soon as your ISP has updated its DNS... (at least, it should... )

Fantastisch, alles loopt nu inderdaad heel wat vlotter :-)

Waar halen jullie het geld toch ?
By snout on March 21 2005, 15:03
To the non-dutch: Argon just told us he is going to donate a lot of money to the MRC. Isn't that nice? ^_^

Seriously though: the MRC admins donate a steady amount of money a month to the MRC foundation, which is enough to keep the site up and running and do some small extras every now and then...

Works great here
By snout on March 21 2005, 23:45
Made some extra improvements.... things should be quite a bit faster (or at least not slower) now ^_^
By Grauw on March 22 2005, 14:59
What, you got rid of all the tables and made the page use CSS instead? What, you publish part of the page content statically, so that it saves on database queries?

^_^

Step by step, Grauw... step by step More CSS, less tables in the future. Static? No! Query cache? Yes!
By Grauw on March 22 2005, 15:59
Ah, query cache, of course, makes sense. That was the change you did just now at 23:45?
By snout on March 22 2005, 16:11
...Tweaked some settings to that cache and improved the indexes of some tables in the database.
