 Topic: Challenges

With the results of MSXdev'05 and the MRC Oneliner Challenge just in, and the MSX-BASIC game contest, Mini games contest and MRC Scene Music Remake Challenge currently running, MSX Resource Center, MSX Games Box and MSX Cafe decided it was high time to launch yet another challenge which focuses on another aspect of MSX: graphics.

For the fourth edition of MSXArt, MSX Games Box, MSX Cafe and MSX Resource Center joined forces, resulting in a two-in-one challenge:
  1. Wallpaper contest - As in previous years, you are free to pick any theme, computer platform and drawing tools you like as long as the result is an MSX related wallpaper. Preferred file format: 300dpi JPEG, 1024x768. Suggested (but non-binding) themes are such as MSX Game Cover remakes, MSX Game Characters, MSX Photo Art (e.g. a photo of your MSX in cool places...) or the One Chip MSX (build your own dream OCM casing!). More details on this part of the challenge can be found over here.

  2. RPG style drawing contest - A theme based challenge in which you have to develop new graphics for the MSX1 or MSX2 computer platform (SCREEN 2 - 8) which could be used in a Japanese style RPG. Game tiles, maps, sceneries, demo graphics and game characters are all valid entries. Please send your entries to msxart06@msx.org including a description on how you created the graphics submitted. BLOAD-able graphics are preferred
By joining the challenge you can win a printed MSX Calendar of the year 2007 with the 12 best artworks sent in to MSXArt'06 and an MSX T-Shirt. You can send in your entries to msxart06@msxgamesbox.com (wallpapers) or msxart06@msx.org (MSX drawings) and they will be added to both the MSX Resource Center and MSX Games Box. You can send in your entries until July 2nd, 2006, 23:59 CET. Happy drawing!

nice idea! especially the RPG gfx contest! what will happen with those gfx? can they be used afterwards by anyone who thinks he could use them for some game or whatever? will they be free? or will msx.org demand some weirdness?
By snout on January 20 2006, 14:18
msx.org won't demand any kind of weirdness, that's for sure. The graphicians might, as it's their works of art...
By DarQ on January 20 2006, 14:24
aha, then i expect (in these days) that they will allow anyone to use it in MSX games (of course mentioning the artists)

im looking forward to see some nice gfx!
By ro on January 20 2006, 17:43

HOw do we unite "300dpi", "JPEG" and "1024x768"?
By msxgamesbox on January 20 2006, 19:45
supply JPG wallpaper for desktop resolution and a high-res PDF file or native .PSD file...
Well, better work for a high-res file, which you save low-res for the wallpapers ... arghhhhh!
hope you understood me; -)

welco me yo n Ms xart(mysonwritinh)

Obvious! Get a 4" monitor.
By BiFi on January 23 2006, 08:35
OMG! JPEG is old... Better use PNG instead

anyway, cool contest... let's see what those gfx peepz have in store for us this time.
By msxgamesbox on January 23 2006, 08:44
If you want to send in a PNG, it's OK as well... the first wallpaper entry came in yerterday ... I'll update the MSX Café MSXart'06 asap.

By viejo_archivero on January 23 2006, 10:49
Nice to see this contest back again, now enforced by MSX Café and the MRC. As I promised, this year I'll join it with some entries .
By msxgamesbox on January 23 2006, 11:13
The MXart'06 Wallpaper gallery is at:

This is where I'll place the incoming wallpapers.

Spain first entry, Italy second one :-) wake up rest of the world ;-) just kidding, you still have a few months left.... happy to see there are already some cool entries after just 2 and half days!

Is there a good poke for Aquarela to work on MSX2? I Tried POKE-1,(15-PEEK(-1)/16)*17, it's very unstable with this poke....

Or any other mouse controlled paint proggy in screen 2, that works on my 8255?

By wolf_ on February 11 2006, 20:10
Perhaps it's not 100% what you're searching for, but you might want to try Polka.

I want to draw on the real thing, not with emu or pc program. Nothing wrong with those two, but I prefer to the real thing on pixeling.

'Age' on sc2 would be excellent!!

By Unicorn on April 06 2006, 23:26
Vote for me, it's the Vampire Killer thingy!
By wolf_ on June 03 2006, 19:45
Are there actually entries already?
By snout on June 03 2006, 20:45
There are a couple of wallpapers (which you can already see on MSXcafé and soon, after some minor tweaks) on MRC and -alas- no RPG gfx as of yet. You can win the challenge easily now... one month to go.

~if I'm out of the extreme busy-ness I'm in right now I'll do some catching-up!
By wolf_ on June 04 2006, 02:44
Maybe it's just a clear signal that there aren't many pixelmeisters in the current scene (or at least not many who would join a challenge).. which is a pity ofcourse..
By snout on June 04 2006, 13:02
Well, it might also mean the pixelmeisters are working on different stuff right now... looking at those often stunning MSXdev'06 title screens...
By wolf_ on June 04 2006, 13:58
pah, that's all msx1, where're the msx2/g9k pixelmeisters? I actually think the lack of pixelmeisters is quite close to reality.. in any way the amount of available pixelers doesn't compare to the amount of coders and composers.

Dunno if there's some way to summon more pixelmeisters..?
By snout on June 04 2006, 14:42
There is, on my todo list somewhere below 'edit reactions'

hint: in the MRC userbase there are

- 423 coders
- 302 graphicians
- 280 musicians

It's all about getting them active again ^_^
By wolf_ on June 04 2006, 15:10
Yeah, f*ck them games, 'edit reactions' has priority here

So, indeed, some ppz need a kick in the 455 to get cracking again.
By wolf_ on June 23 2006, 21:07
still zippo?

cancel it?

it's easy to quickly submit a single entry.. but where's the fun in that?

By wolf_ on June 23 2006, 21:09
302 graphicians? after you fix0rred the edit-reaction, make a checkbox in the user profile to specify whether a user is actually amongst the living ppl.
By wolf_ on July 03 2006, 21:30
yay, infinite missed yet another deadline ^______^

* places another "misseddeadline-trophy" on the trophy-desk
By Unicorn on July 03 2006, 22:04
I contributed something from my ‘Forces Beyond Empire’ dump pile but I guess nobody checks the mailbox anymore.
By snout on July 03 2006, 22:08
we do, we do... but I did not have the time to do an update yet... there's more news to come. Hang on!
By viejo_archivero on July 07 2006, 12:57
oh I missed this one , I was finishing mine
By snout on July 07 2006, 13:43
viejo - no prob, you might already have guessed that the deadline is to be extended a bit. I hope to have the time to code a few tidbits this Sunday and give a big status update. Hang on!
By Unicorn on July 10 2006, 23:21
A prolongation, eh? Great! It would have been a sour victory to have won due to the lack of entries. And while you’re all at it, send in a nice MSX wallpaper as well. It summer, so it’s not like you guys have some important stuff too do, right? Let those pixels fly, oh yeah!
By viejo_archivero on July 12 2006, 11:13
Oh, nice!. I'll finish it then!!
