Games & Demos - MSXdev '07 - Caos Begins

 Thursday, December 27, 2007 - 15:55
 Submitted by: wolf_
 Topic: Games & Demos

From Hikaru Games comes the next finished MSXdev'07 entry: Caos Begins. This platform game, much in the style of Konami's Maze of Gallious, features catchy PSG music, colorful graphics and all the essential game play bits you'd expect from the platform genre. The game comes as a 32KB ROM and requires 16KB RAM. ROM label, instruction manual and even box artwork is available as well.

*** Update *** A new ROM version is available!

Ha, ha, ha! God of War for the MSX.

Nice entry, for sure. It's been a while since I've played a new MSX game with so much enthusiasm.

"Give Caronte my regards!"
By msxrestarter on December 27 2007, 18:32
Looks great
By Imanok on December 27 2007, 18:41
Great story, graphics, music and playability... the best entry so far!! Congrats!!
By LeandroCorreia on December 27 2007, 19:15
I agree, Imanok...

BTW, is there a Continue option?
By guantxip on December 27 2007, 19:31
Really good!!

Impressive background graphics and the quality of melodies.

The first notes of intro remember me Undeadline (but only PSG). Congratulations!
By jltursan on December 27 2007, 19:39
Really superb!
By dvik on December 27 2007, 19:54
Really nice game. Graphics is superb. Congrats to us that got this nice game to play
By MrSpock on December 27 2007, 20:06
Thanks for your comments about Caos Begins! 8-)

And... yes... I felt a bit strange after writing "Ares, the God of War"... God of War sounds strangely familiar to me ;-) However... the greek mythology was "invented" a long time before Kratos

Regarding to Continue, Caos Begins does not have a continue option. The game can be finished in a reasonable time, so that Continue is not necessary.

Again: Thanks!

By LeandroCorreia on December 27 2007, 20:48
I just said "God of War" because its another Greek mithology game, only that (please MSXDEV judges, do not remove points in its originality! ). I did not play "God of War" to compare it.
By MrSpock on December 27 2007, 21:31
I know, Leandro. I was just joking.
As a matter of fact, I've never player God of War.
By spl on December 27 2007, 23:30
Excellent game!
By poke-1,170 on December 28 2007, 04:39
nice tunes, nice sprites (they look cute).. very playable as well...
I like how the character moves around, it's fluent.
Yup... me likes a lot ^_^

By ro on December 28 2007, 08:29
Today another entry(!)

Surprises keep comin' along! CEZ GS previously announced project BeTiled! has just become a finished game!

but first I gotta check chaosbegins.... nice game, indeed. MOG inspired for sure, but I love MOG so I'm not complaining. (tho SFX are very similar.. hmzz, SEE wit MOG rip?)
By Huey on December 28 2007, 10:31
Great! Good sprites!

I feel a bit Megaman influence gfx wise. Good one!
By MrSpock on December 28 2007, 11:17
Hi, Ro! No, no MoG rip at all, neither SEE. I used a tool coming from spectrum community (sorry, I can't remember the name of the tool now), and written PSG register values by hand into data file.

aaargh!

That alone deserves a bonus point for courage.. ^^
By GhostwriterP on December 28 2007, 12:12
Well... I am stuck!
Can not seem to find that last item, something to cut the cobweb with.
Oh well , maby there will be a walkthrough some day.

ps: I did get my level way up with all that mindless running around
By MrSpock on December 28 2007, 15:11
GhistriderP: The item you need to cut the cobweb is a bit more difficult to find than the other ones, indeed.
I know where it is, but I think it will be more rewarding for you to find it by yourself

I must say that I am very happy that you played the game up to this point!
By robertwilting on December 28 2007, 15:43
To ghostwriterp. still looking for the item ???.
Let me give you a hint. written backwards

.tog ouy meti tsal eht deen ouY

By poke-1,170 on December 28 2007, 15:57
shit, same thing here... finished it last night almost, got stuck with the cobweb thing as well.
Indeed it seems that an item is missing in the list.... but not a clue where

By NYYRIKKI on December 28 2007, 17:56
Am I correct, there was some other cobweb in some other room as well? I just can't find it anymore...
By poke-1,170 on December 28 2007, 18:14
exactly, that's what I kept thinking too once I reached the girl.
I had seen it before but can't quite remember... I guess the forest or something ?
By robertwilting on December 28 2007, 19:48
You are right about the other cobweb. But it's not the forrest.
This cobweb will lead to the room with the last weapon !
And now I'm off
By msxrestarter on December 28 2007, 20:17
Damned, I'm also stuck
Last item I found is the TITAN BRACELET, but don't know what to do with it
By robertwilting on December 28 2007, 20:33
Titan bracelet won't help you much it's purely a weapon. Increasing stats. Not a item which removes something.
Also it's heavy which means lower movement and lower jump. But it's powerfull at the time you find it !

About the game. While it was a ok game. So far the best of this year MSX DEV.
I do got the feeling that it missed something to make it a true classic.
On the good side it did make me want to play and finish it which has been a long time when it comes to a MSX game.
By msxrestarter on December 28 2007, 20:42
I see. Then the magic seed is the last item I found.
What do you guys mean by cobweb ? Is it a black&white wall that looks like a web ?
If that's the case, then I'm also stuck at a cobweb
By poke-1,170 on December 28 2007, 22:08
nah the magic seed isn't the last item by far...

you got orpheus lyre, picollo and prometeus fire as well.
Hmmm... also now that I think of it, the other cobweb is a wall,
the one at the chica is a floor... Also I discovered you can use the
magic seed for a quick re entry into the castle at some point
Ah, found the first cobweb... which is in the second part of te castle
(after you open the floor with the silver key, on the right side of the large pillar)
can't open it though....rats :S

By poke-1,170 on December 28 2007, 22:27
has anyone played the adventures of robert wilting ?
Here you have to play a character that has to help players
who got stuck in caos begins.
By GhostwriterP on December 29 2007, 11:48
Found it!
And found a bug aswell. You see, if your life get above 80 or so and you get rewarded, refill and upgrade, the counter overflows.
To avoid this I had to get hit on purpose to keep my life low enough
Anyway I enjoyed playing Caos.
By MrSpock on December 29 2007, 23:11
Oops! You are right, GhostwriterP, about the bug. I know one betatester who is going to kill me
I have just corrected the problem, and I will re-submit the corrected version, together with the final box-art, tomorrow night.
By dvik on December 29 2007, 23:19
Another tiny bug (feature perhaps). If you jump with the big shoes onto a small platform with a monster and you don't want to jump into him, you can hit F2 right when you are above the edge on the platform and switch weapon. Then you fall right down and avoid jumping into the monster. I found that feature quite handy sometimes but I'm not sure its intentional
By MrSpock on December 29 2007, 23:29
Hi, dvik! Well, what you mention is not exactly a bug... it's intentional. But it was not meant to be used to avoid monsters as you describe. It was meant to avoid problems to the player if F1/F2 is pressed while wearing a weapon that modifies significantly the inertia of the player. It's difficult to explain, but there is a reason for this. However, I like you use it as some sort of "trick"

By hap on December 30 2007, 12:27
very nice, polished game, love it
By ro on December 30 2007, 22:21
okay, I just finished the game.. man, 'Edward' (last item...) was hard to find to attack the cobweb. While cutting, I found the last sword. What does it do? I like the magic wand more

overall, nice game (which I also HAD to finish once I started) but lacks some good stuff to make it a brill game. It's, I dunno, to linear or something.
Good music (caught myself humming it .. gheh), good SFX (tho I swear I recognize some...) nice GFX, nice enemies. not to difficult but sometimes a pain in the bottom.

This strange bug, which was reported, was huanting me; exp over 80 makes live hell. I found myself having 00/00 live at the last scenes!! (and I made it through!!! not one hit. gheh) Very annoying but thanx to save states on BlueMSX I made it in one piece.. I believe the publisher fixed it already?

.. so I can finally get some sleep... goodnight
By MrSpock on December 30 2007, 22:51
Thanks for your comments, ro, I really appreciate them. I know it's not an "excuse" (neither is a reason to excuse or something, as it seems to me you enjoyed the game ) but, regarding to additional things that could have been added to the game, take into account that it is a 32KB ROM.

Regarding to linearity, well, it can be. However, the game was designed so that it could be finished withouth saving. That is, so that the game could be replayed again and again as you learn more about the map and item locations. Doing a game with "extra stuff" and less "linear" would have leaded Caos to a different game concept. Of course, I can understand your point.

Regarding to the bug you mention, it has been corrected and the fixed ROM has just been uploaded to the web, so right now it can be downloaded. Also, the new gamecover and manual with new illustrations are available. Both gamecover and new illustrations have been drawn by a friend, Francesc Felipe.
By dvik on December 31 2007, 08:02
A small question, what do I do with the Prometeus Fire? I suppse I need to do something with it to get some item to cut the cobweb, or?
By ro on December 31 2007, 10:11
Yes DVIK, you do. Just equip it and walk the walk and you'll find out. You need it twice once in the underground and once in the first part of the castle... whoops I already told you too much here
