MSXdev'06 #07: Skate Air

Games & Demos - MSXdev'06 #07: Skate Air

 Tuesday, December 19, 2006 - 12:58

Germán Gómez Herrera, an active contestant in the Karoshi MSX Basic Contest and MRC oneliner challenge has submitted the seventh entry to the MSXdev'06 challenge. His game, Skate Air lets you ride the skateboard, arcade style.

With only a few weeks left, it's safe to assume that games are in their polishing stage at this moment. There's no doubt about it that more games will be released in the next few weeks, with some of these games being highly anticipated ones. It seems that the end of 2006 will be great once again, thanks to the MSXDev challenge! In total, seven entries for the MSXdev'06 competition have been released by now.

It looks retro, but not 'MSX retro', for some reason.. I've yet to run it, but according to the screenshot on the MSXDev status page, the gfx have some charm I'd say. It could also be that its screenshot is placed directly under the Sudoku game, which makes for a world o' difference. It reminds me of very early games in the 80's, not even MSX games perse..

ok, played it for a little while: still doesn't remind of me MSX1.. I guess that's good orso! It's probably due all those different colors for buildings. Bonuspoints for the music I'd say! Fun game!

Really reminds me of some game I saw before on MSX

Who would you give the bonuspoints to then?

The font looks familiar too, and the game over jingle: they're from Krak Out.

Funny, I got the exact feeling when I saw that screenshot. It reminded me of that "rock&roll soundtrack" game from ponyca. Can't remember the name, but indeed. . . it's a shameless rip! Ohwell
By Huey on December 19 2006, 15:21

As long as the code is own build I think its according MSXdev rules.
By hap on December 19 2006, 15:46
I don't see any mention of it in the documentation. I say give credit where credit's due (hey, new smileys )

Imagine the graphics having been taken from The Cure, and (heh, why not) the titlescreen from Malaika
By ibantxuyn on December 19 2006, 15:54
ey! the ponyca gameshot isn't "Back from the Future" ???

This new game reminds it
By spl on December 19 2006, 16:46
I don't care about the graphics: game is fun, music is great and scroll is really fast
By Huey on December 19 2006, 16:46
Ever examned the gfx of the cure? There is sure some great influence from other games. Not a direct copy but where's the line.....

If you look at my GFX (retrodevelopment.wordpress.com) you will also see very strong influences. Drawing by exmaple shows a lot more than coding by example. To be honest I don't event mind the GFX similarities for this MSXdev entry. It's all about gameplay.

[EDIT] Darn spl beat me to the real facts [/EDIT]
By wolf_ on December 19 2006, 17:21
The line could be when it concerns real 1:1 copies..
By POISONIC on December 22 2006, 00:27

The programmer could have used a litle of his own imagination when it comes to graphics.
