MSXdev'06 #09: Night city

Games & Demos - MSXdev'06 #09: Night city

 Thursday, December 21, 2006 - 23:59

 Topic: Games & Demos

Germán Gómez Herrera, developer of Skate Air, has submitted another entry to the MSXdev'06 competition, which - with 9 games released and 10 days to go until the deadline - is currently reaching its apotheosis. In his new game, Night City, you have to search for various objects in the city and return home in time. During your quest you will have to fight with several enemies, such as ghosts, rats and policemen.

With only 10 days left, it's safe to assume that more brand new MSX1 games are to be released in the upcoming days. In total, nine entries for the MSXdev'06 competition have been released by now. Thanks to MSXdev, the year 2006 will end in style!

In the interest of disclosure of source material: linky.
By hap on December 22 2006, 00:37
I didn't know Usas had a side story, Wit feels left out though
Good music, is it original?
By Edwin on December 22 2006, 00:59
He has one extra line compared to Cles
By snout on December 22 2006, 01:43
hey... it's been 19 years since Usas... so the guy grew a little.... ^_^
By SLotman on December 22 2006, 03:28
Hmmm... graphics seems to be ripped straight out from other games from the screenshot on MSXDev page...

Is it ok to do that? I think it's kind of unfair to the other games/developers, who took the time to draw everything from scratch...

Not that I'm complaining, just wanted to know if that is ok by the contest rules - I read them at MSXDev's site and couldnt figure if it was allowed or not
By Vampier on December 22 2006, 03:56
Usas meets death wish 3? with Goody sprites?

a well, missed opportunity.
By ro on December 22 2006, 08:07
Damn, again ripped gfx. oh well, it's the fun that counts.
too bad it don't run on my the blue emu.. . . . (but thaz prob me)

Yeah it is It took a while for me to get it to run too. You need to open the rom using the 'Cartridge->Insert' dialog and select the rom mapper: 'Konami Generic'. Then it will run. This rom mapper is like konami but without fixed page 0. Not sure what real cart to use to run it.
By viejo_archivero on December 22 2006, 08:39
I guess the jury will take straight-ripping in account when judging the entries
By dvik on December 22 2006, 08:44
I hope the jury take that into concideration. The game is good though and I enjoyed playing it so the game somewhat compensates for the ripped gfx with good gameplay I liked both this game and the skateboard game
By manuel on December 22 2006, 09:50
Weird, using a mapper that doesn't exist in reality. Is this allowed?
By SaebaMSX on December 22 2006, 09:59
Manuel, other MSX carts have their own mappers... and this one follows Konami standard afaik (I didn't check it myself). Of course, standard mappers are welcome.
By ARTRAG on December 22 2006, 10:04
The change of prospective each time you cross the street is very disappointing.
I get lost very soon...
By Huey on December 22 2006, 11:06
I hope Germán Gómez Herrera finds someone who will help with creating graphics (and music) for his next releases. Two entries in one competition!

And for openMSX this reads:
openmsx NIGHTE.ROM -romtype Konami

"The obtained punctuation is in function of enemy's type and like it is eliminated. There is also extra punctuation when finding the objects." right...
By manuel on December 22 2006, 19:18
Ah, it's a 64kB ROM with a Konami mapper (they don't exist). That confuses the romtype-guesser of openMSX which means you have to use explicit romtype specification, as AuroraMSX said.

About the impressive in-game music, it was composed by Gasman from AY-Riders, Six miles high (2005)[PT3]
By only_69 on December 22 2006, 21:33
Do not forget the sprites from Ninja Jaja Maru

I actually like these games. Its pretty fun to learn from what games the gfx is taken. Its a pretty fun idea
By manuel on December 22 2006, 22:40
<nag mode>Um, a 64kB MegaROM?</nag mode>

Anyway, great to see yet another entry!
By pitpan on December 23 2006, 00:23
64 KB MegaROM means a megaROM that handles 0.5 megabits

Actually, by megaROM it supposedly means cartridge with mapper.
By ro on December 24 2006, 09:54
Still won't run in BlueMSX (using Konami Generetic cart)
By spl on December 24 2006, 14:11
ro, I can perfectly play on BLUEMSX
By msd on December 24 2006, 17:12
I also don't get it working in blueMSX.
By dvik on December 25 2006, 10:51
Weird. It must be something with the rom selection. I made a little database file you can try. Just unzip and place the file in the Databases directory (same directory where softwaredb.xml is located).

By ro on December 25 2006, 12:03
still not worky worky
By dvik on December 25 2006, 19:08
@ro, what MSX machine are you running in the emulator?
By dvik on December 25 2006, 19:30
I have three rom files of the game for some reason. Here is how they work (only the first is in that little database):

NIGHTE.ROM: Konami Generic
NIGHT.ROM: ASCII8 (downloaded today from msxdev)
EN-NIGHT: ASCII8 (downloaded today from msxdev)
By ro on December 25 2006, 20:21
Just standard MSX2 or MSX1 (both don't work). The ROM files are them DLed from the dev website: EN-NIGHT.ROM, NIGHT.ROM

By dvik on December 25 2006, 20:24
I added the missing roms and uploaded a new version to: http://www.bluemsx.com/msxdevdb2.zip
By ro on December 25 2006, 23:31
that works, so it's NOT Konami but ASCII 8 ROM....
By msd on December 26 2006, 11:14
Yes with ascii 8k it works fine
By manuel on December 26 2006, 11:39
Um, how can it be that there are both ASCII8 and Konami mapped ROMs around???
By hap on December 26 2006, 18:30
that's not very mysterious

"Germán Gómez Herrera has just updates his two entries, Skate Air and Night City. Now both games uses an Ascii8KB mapper. Download those new versions now!."
By dvik on December 27 2006, 06:18
he he, I missed that but it certainly explains the confusion. Great that the game is updated to use a standard mapper

Maybe also update the comment on the msxdev status page: This game uses "Konami Generic" mapper
By mars2000you on December 27 2006, 13:21
Status page has been edited
By hap on December 27 2006, 14:47
Welcome back mars, forget last week's drama. As an MSXDEV team member, could you say if ripped graphics+music is allowed?
By mars2000you on December 27 2006, 15:13
Read the rules and take your conclusions, I won't say here nor my personal opinion, nor the MSXDEV team opinion on this matter. The jury will also make his work in january. All official MSXDEV infos and decisions will appear on the MSXDEV website at the appropriate moment.
