Last night the MSXdev'07 competition officially closed. This year, no less than 12 entries - meaning 12 brand new MSX1 games for you to enjoy - were submitted to the contest. Here is an overview of all entries:
  • Balloon City (AG Software) - Shoot the balloons with your spaceship
  • Yahtzee (dvik&joyrex) - A classic dice game in your MSX
  • Crazy MSX Frenchies (The MSX Café) - Pairs game in the Crazy MSX Frenchies' way
  • Mr. Mole (Nerlaska Studio) - Destroy all the briks in this cute Blockout game
  • Bag Man (AG Software) - Be fast and pick up all money bags on time
  • Penguin Mind (The MSX Café) - Frogger meets Mastermind in this original game
  • Txupinazo! (Imanok) - Hability game where you must run the bulls at San Fermin!
  • Caos Begins (Hikaru Games) - An impressive platform-adventure game in the Ancient Greek
  • BeTiled! (ComputerEmuzone Games Studio) - A new MSX puzzler for your brain
  • Lotus F3 (dvik&joyrex) - Competitive bird-view racing game with great visuals
  • Night Driver (Karoshi Corporation) - The classic Atari racing game for MSX
  • Italian Stallion (Impulse9) - Go for the championship belt in this Boxing game
Now it is time for the jury - Timo Soilamaa (a.k.a. NYYRIKKI), Roberto Vargas (a.k.a. k0ga) from TNI and José Andrés Gil (a.k.a. Konamito) from Konamito.com and the MSX Resource Center Crew - to set the winner of the contest, that will be announced the 31st of January of 2008.

If you have not already done so, now it is time for you to celebrate the end of yet another active MSX year by downloading and playing all those new games at the MSXdev contest website as well as the games from previous editions of the contest. Enjoy and happy gaming!

Great entries again this year.

So what happened to:
Goonies: The Movie, Sphere Redux and Mystic Swords ?

(wolf, weren't you gonna participate this year too?)

By viejo_archivero on December 31 2007, 10:22
ro: We have no news about The Goonies; Sphere Redux was discontinued as its author understood it was way too simple, but helped him to learn and finish Italian Stallion; Mystic Swords wasn't done on time, and as we want to polish the game as much as we can we at Karoshi have delayed its release to 2008. The entry from Infinite has been postponed too, as although the game was mostly done according to them, it still needs to be polished, so they've decided not to enter the contest with the game.

so, how'bout an extension of the deadline
neh, next year will be great!

thanx for clearing viejo!
By Imanok on December 31 2007, 12:27
Why don't setting up the rules of the next MSXDev edition in january, so that 'Mystic Swords' and Infinite's game could entry the competition as the first games of the new edition??
By SLotman on December 31 2007, 12:37
I dont think it would be fair to the other games/developers, if on the next MSXDev was allowed stuff that was developed for '07 contest and not finished to enter the next one...

After all, how can a game developed in 6 months can compete with one developed in 2 years? It is possible, but very unlikely the "6 months game" would be better...
By wolf_ on December 31 2007, 12:39
ro: read here!
By snout on December 31 2007, 12:44
SLotman: there are several games released in various editions of MSXdev that did not make it to the deadline of the previous years. I see no problem in that. After all, the main goal is to get new MSX1 games released... right?
By wolf_ on December 31 2007, 12:54
slotman: in addition to that, it's hard to define what took a year and what not. If you do unique completely new one-shot code for one game in one year time, then you could say that a game took a year to make. But what if you gradually make all kinda systems? E.g. we still use a gfx-system we made in spring 2006 already, we've used it on RNFF, and we've used it for our current postponed entry. If over the years you make all kinda engines, then the development of such engines will take some time, but in the end, making a game goes much faster. There's simply no telling how long it really takes to make a game. Our postponed entry was conceived on 1 December 2007 ^_^, yet it uses our gfx-system from '06, our music-player from spring '07, a souped-up editor from autumn'06 which was actually a souped-up version from spring'06. If we release next week, how long did development take? 5 weeks or nearly 2 years?
By Imanok on December 31 2007, 12:56
I totally agree with snout
By Edwin on December 31 2007, 13:21
With regard to missing the deadline, it actually kinda funny when you think about. The conversion program for the music has been in development for well over a year now. And at least for the last couple of months it has proven solid and worked without major issues. And yesterday, exactly on the last day for the deadline, it starts producing subtly bad data streams for tunes created in the last few days. And not a single obvious reason for it either. Makes you wonder what coincidence really means.

We'll fix it. But I really wonder what will turn out to be the culprit.
By wolf_ on December 31 2007, 16:02
As for the dev entries, can't there be one big zip with all the entries (rom, label, manual)?
By SLotman on December 31 2007, 18:29
wolf: your game was conceived in december - so no matter the libs/tools you have, it isn't a "1 year game" - the entries not ready for this year, will have a complete year to be debugged, improved (graphically, sound, music and gameplay-wise) and tuned for the best possible results.

Now whoever starts a new game, even having tons of tools to help, still have to balance gameplay, prepare songs, gfx, etc - which puts every new contestant on the next msxdev 08 behind those unfinished games.

But dont get me wrong, I was anxious to see Mystical Swords and Goonies the Movie... but guess I'll have to wait for them.
By Yukio on December 31 2007, 18:45
Cool, Mystic Swords would be a 2008 game!
Does anyone know the rules for the 2008 competition !?

By the way, in the previous contest rules there was a mention of a Turbo R . But the prize of this year was only intended to be a (very nice) card reader plus 200 Euros ...

Still, they could take another year themselves and apply for msxdev 09

Nice, why not make another competition for the games that aren't finished? Since some people lost the BASIC competitions of December, why not use the new year of the Chinese calendar?

To bad, that this not worked in the past ... It would not be difficulty to set new prizes for another competition!

By Yukio on December 31 2007, 19:28
Past years ...

Thinking about it, I should possess three to four (even more) 'not finished' entries of past years ... At least the game concept was developed further enough! It was strange that some people didn't wanted those, maybe gambling games and prizes would not be very popular into some circles or places.

Even Google seems to disregards addictive gambling and winning combinations!!!

Slots and electronic casino games seems to be so 'funny'. Like the Treasure Hunter types of software ...

There could be even other types of games and contraventions. Like the 'illegal' type of games.

Anyway, Carchano is not selling MegaRAM anymore. Maybe in another year or soo ...

By dvik on December 31 2007, 20:37
I think its ok to develop a game one year and participate in msxdev another year. I know of several promising games that are under development and I'd be very happy to see them end up as entries in a future msxdev.
And msxdev'07 had one entry developed in 1986. I hope it won't be disqualified
By Huey on January 02 2008, 09:50
I wonder who will get the prize for the best shooter (As there aren't any. Although balloon city comes close to a shooter)
By dvik on January 02 2008, 10:05
Balloon City is a shooter
By Huey on January 02 2008, 10:24
Then Balloon city is the winner already.
By wolf_ on January 02 2008, 11:40
Well, sorry to piss on his parade, but *we* haven't even received the best shooter prize from msxdev'05 yet.. -hint hint- .. (did XL2s actually receive their tR?)
By arnold_m on January 03 2008, 23:01
I disagree with the idea that spending more than one year on an MSXdev entry is unfair.
I think that a team that spends two years developing a game deserves it more to win a price than someone who makes a game in just six months, unless the latter is so bright that he or she comes up with a better game in those six months. The MSXdev jury judges the games, not the programmers or production teams.

To compare the programming skills there are programming contests where the participants get equal time and tools to solve the same programming problems, Such contests are completely fair, but they do not produce any nice games.
By Yukio on January 05 2008, 05:51
Hum ... Maybe because of it that I was tempting to try some basic (even in MSX-BASIC or TURBO PASCAL) shooting game!!!

It would be cool to have a great music too ...

ZX Spectrum games!
Sure, I wanted to enter in the ZX Spectrum BASIC competition of Bytemaniacos ....
By Huey on January 05 2008, 08:56
I was thinking why not put some movies (trailer/demo) of the games on youtube and add those to the MSXdev site.
This isn't only a nice feature but might attract other sceners too.
