Challenges - MSXsoft 2007

 Topic: Challenges

On MSX Tudo and various Brazilian mailing lists, the MSX software development contest MSXsoft 2007 has just been announced. The contest has been launched because of the success of the MSX Resource Center challenges and MSXdev competitions and the low activity of Brazilian MSX developers compared to the tremendous activity on Brazilian MSX mailinglists and community websites such as Orkut.

The contest is different from other challenges we've seen so far, as it challenges developers to develop either of the following
  • An EVA editor
  • A compression toolkit
  • A new format for compressed images
  • A library for a user interface
  • A compiler for Uzix
  • An MSX port of Elifoot
  • Gopher for Uzix
  • A text-based webbrowser, such as Lynx for Uzix
  • Ports of Unix utilities such as vi and gzip to Uzix
  • Multiplayer MSX games
  • Libraries for JoyNet in Turbo Pascal, Assembly and C
Suggestions for other 'challenges' can be submitted as well. More information about the competition can be found, in Portuguese, on the MSXsoft 2007 website.

Orkut ^__^

(always good for a laugh, and no, I'm not going to explain to the non-Dutch )

In case anyone is looking for information on JoyNet, here is the old original page that documented it:

http://datax.grauw.nl/joynet/joynet.html

By the way, as it is unbuffered, I wonder if it is OK to connect to different types of computers like this. It would be nice if someone who ‘knows his hardware’ could review it. At least be careful to wire everything correctly, because if you short-circuit your joystick port it’s very easy to break it (and as it’s part of the MSX-Engine in most -if not all- MSX computers, it’s not easy to fix).

Not all MSX computers have an MSX-ENGINE Grauw (most MSX1 machines haven't and some (earlier) MSX2 machines haven't either). But the warning stands, indeed!

(Of course the MSX-ENGINE is the real first idea of a one chip MSX!)
