Metal Gear fans all around the world have been waiting for a re-release of the original, first MSX2 release of
Metal Gear 1 (Konami, 1987) ever since Metal Gear Solid was released on Sony Playstation one. Today, Konami released
this press release in which they announced they will release an extended version of the original game on 3 different mobile platforms:
iMode by NTT DoCoMo,
AU by kddi and
Vodafone G-Mode, thus supporting the three largest Mobile phone networks in Japan.
As the
official Metal Gear 1 rerelease website shows, the new game will stick very close to the original. It comes as no surprise that Hideo Kojima himself will be directing the game and that several extra's, like a Boss Survival Mode, will be added to the game.
As Konami mentions MSX a lot in their
press release, itMedia reported on it on
their website and MSX gets mentioned in the
history section of the Metal Gear 1 website, this instantly resulted in three new nominees for the
MSX in the Media challenge, which have now been added to the
list of nominees.
For a long time Konami seemed to be very reluctant to re-release the very first Metal Gear 1 game on other platforms than MSX. It is yet unclear whether or not Metal Gear 1 will be released on other platforms than Cellular phones on Japanese networks, let alone if Konami is planning on re-releasing
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake as well. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, released 14 years ago, is the second part in the ever growing Metal Gear saga and has been a MSX exclusive game to date. Time will tell if Konami intends to keep it that way.
