MSX Related - Metal Gear 1 re-release on mobile phones

Metal Gear fans all around the world have been waiting for a re-release of the original, first MSX2 release of Metal Gear 1 (Konami, 1987) ever since Metal Gear Solid was released on Sony Playstation one. Today, Konami released this press release in which they announced they will release an extended version of the original game on 3 different mobile platforms: iMode by NTT DoCoMo, AU by kddi and Vodafone G-Mode, thus supporting the three largest Mobile phone networks in Japan.

As the official Metal Gear 1 rerelease website shows, the new game will stick very close to the original. It comes as no surprise that Hideo Kojima himself will be directing the game and that several extra's, like a Boss Survival Mode, will be added to the game.

As Konami mentions MSX a lot in their press release, itMedia reported on it on their website and MSX gets mentioned in the history section of the Metal Gear 1 website, this instantly resulted in three new nominees for the MSX in the Media challenge, which have now been added to the list of nominees.

For a long time Konami seemed to be very reluctant to re-release the very first Metal Gear 1 game on other platforms than MSX. It is yet unclear whether or not Metal Gear 1 will be released on other platforms than Cellular phones on Japanese networks, let alone if Konami is planning on re-releasing Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake as well. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, released 14 years ago, is the second part in the ever growing Metal Gear saga and has been a MSX exclusive game to date. Time will tell if Konami intends to keep it that way.

And all the ppl in the offices are gonna play it, during precious office-time..

until they receive an SMS from their boss: "This is big boss.. you're fired!"

Well, this is of course excellent news. Looking at the released images it looks like the remake is done with even lesser colors than those 16 at the same time we've got on MSX2. How much exactly? 8 colors? 12? Strange. I thought those 3rd generation mobiles have at least 4096 colors at the same time. Hmmpf. They probably make it for those older generations too. To bad. Hopefully it does support polyphonic sound chips. That would be cool! MG1 with 9 channel stereo sound. It would also make up for the decrease in gfx coloring.

Huh? The images look exactly the same to me as the MSX2 images do.
As far as I can see, this is a straight port.

The game almost seems emulated, does Konami have paid the MSX Association? Nishi will get angry...

Nice, Konami has come up with yet another meaning of MSX: MicroSoft Extension...
Look here: http://www.konami.co.jp/press/2004/08/031/r.16.08.18.html.

Anyway, does a simple copyright/trademark notice count for the MSX in the media challenge? Because that's all it looks to me in the official press-release.

@Jalu,

Well.. Japanese Companies are not always that good in making translations

For the rest: I can only hope this will be avaible here in Europe as well in the future

Jalu, it's not just a simple copyright/trademark notice.

cool, they must make it for I-MODE
and the sound should not be a problem...
MSX 3 has channel PSG (everybody knows)
I-Mode phones like a NEC N341i has 40 polyphonic sound (yamaha FM + PCM)
there are EVEN 64 polyphonic phones..

it works on NTT Docomo's foma900 which is kind of a next-generation iMode if I'm not mistaken...
