Obsonet - First batch released

Hardware - Obsonet - First batch released

 Submitted by: snout
 Topic: Hardware

In August 2004 we reported about ObsoNET: Ethernet for MSX. Finally, it would be possible to connect MSX computers to the internet and/or a home network by using ordinary ethernet connections.

The first batch of ObsoNET cartridges has been produced and is currently finding its way to the very first people who signed up for one. Bundled with Internestor Lite, the card is ready to be used for telnet, FTP and the development of home-made networking tools and games, possibly to be submitted to the ILAC'04 competition.

For more information on ObsoNET, or ordering a cartridge of the second batch of ObsoNET cards, you can visit the Obsonet website.

Mind you, this is -NOT- an april fools joke

Nice a nice new feature to request to be emulated
By sander on April 01 2005, 11:57
Hmm, emulation kills new hardware productions?
By snout on April 01 2005, 12:56
It might, and it might not. Having obsonet compatibility in emulators might encourage people to develop software for it. In the end, I think there are many people who want to have the real thing on real MSX anyway, especially when there's cool software available...

Software is the key, and everyone can code Internet apps in NestorBASIC, ASM, or even C! And INL can be used with Obsonet or RS232, so wide range of MSX user would have use for them. What is stopping you developers?
By wolf_ on April 01 2005, 14:20
As long as for example soundchips such as fm-pac/opl4 aren't emulated 100% yet there's a reason to use the real thing.
By DarQ on April 01 2005, 18:15
not a very good analogy wolf_

emulating a NIC is more straigthforward than a soundchip. btw: you know that scc sounds different when emulated, but do you think the tcp/ip packages would look different when an emulated NIC puts it on the datastream?

i don;t think so.

an emulated scc may sound different, but the music is still the same. a nic may not be any different than the real thing because it wouldnt work then.
