One Chip MSX status update

MSX Revival - One Chip MSX status update

 Wednesday, September 27, 2006 - 01:56

 Topic: MSX Revival

Source: D4E mailing list

D4 Enterprise have just announced that more than 4,500 people have shown interest in the One Chip MSX, which means that sales of the One Chip MSX is to start soon. As, initially, a limited amount of 5,000 One Chip MSX computers will be produced, this sounds like the right time to subscribe to the One Chip MSX newsletter at Bazix (for distribution outside Japan) or D4E (for distribution in Japan). Through these news letters it is first announced when orders on the One Chip MSX can be placed, so that you don't have to miss out on it.

During the Tokyo Gameshow the One Chip MSX was demonstrated on the D4E booth. Several media and blogs have reported about this booth and published pictures of the One Chip MSX in action. Apart from the RetroPC report and photo shoot we reported about earlier, a large and complete list of websites that reported about the One Chip MSX can be found in this newspost on Gigamix online.

Will gaijins have to wait until the second batch or will a couple of those first 5000 be shipped to Bazix?

according to Bazix, there will be some available for the not-Japanese:
"A limited amount of One Chip MSX computers will be available through Bazix from the first batch. By registering you make sure you are the first to know when real orders can be placed. "

Very good news. Hope we will be able to buy (pre-order or order) one soon. I can't wait!

One feature I am a little concerned about, is that the OCM will have Kanji ROM inside. Does this mean that all Konami games will recognise this as a Japanese MSX and display japanese text, instead of their european made text?

That has nothing to do with the Kanji ROM, but with the version of the BIOS ROM. If the BIOS has a Japanese version ID (as the OCM will have) then these games will display Japanese titles. If the BIOS has an International version ID they'll display 'English'. It's just one byte most games check though, and the advantage of the OCM is that it's probably easy to 'flash' a new BIOS.

I was wondering, it has been a long time since MSX2 support was announced in OCM. Since we are now close to the release date, a good question would be what can we expect to the future of OCM? I mean, what is likely to be available in the first VHDL code update? MSX2+ support? new sprite modes? a faster and improved z80? Anyone can bring some information about this question?

Just thought about this: if you can indeed easily flash the BIOS, you could use C-BIOS on "real" hardware quite easily

I want a Z380 based MSX3. But with its own keyboard and a real MSX look! (Yeah, and also I want 1M€, and to have more hair, and...)

I'm interested in the level of MSX2 emulation actually.
