A new version of the multi-tasking operating system SymbOS has been released today. Probably the three most outstanding features are the richtext support, the 1024KB ram support and the MP3MSX plugin for the included SymAmp application. Many features were already available in the regularly published preview versions, but here is a summary of the most important changes compared to the last version 1.1:
  • The new "SymbOS extensions" module can be loaded optinally during the booting process and provides additional functions like the "security" dialogue.
  • Up to 24 applications can now be loaded and executed at the same time to have a better usage of the new 1MB address space.
  • The floppy disc drivers for Philips, Sony and other models have probably been completely debugged now.
  • SymbOS supports the handling of shared services. These are processes, which run in the background and provide their functions like accessing external hardware and other things to multiple applications at the same time.
  • The file selection, info and confirm windows have been enhanced with several new options.
  • SymShell includes new control codes for better VT100, VT52 and ANSI terminal emulation.
  • SymbOS has been completely ported to the Amstrad PCW, which is the third supported platform now.
The complete changelog is available on the SymbOS website. As usual specific details on the MSX version, feedback and development support can all be obtained and delivered in the SymbOS discussion on our forum.

Well, like for the 1.1, it's time now to implement more MSX specific stuff again Next thing will probably be GFX9000 support.

How funny would that be, the first truly serious/largescale finished G9k product is to be under construction by someone with CPC roots who just came around the corner recently to hop on the MSX bandwagon. It actually says something about our scene tho.. ._.

Unfortunately a bug crept in in the last moment (caused by a new "onWindowScroll" event message feature). The SymShell window didn't scroll anymore, which happend on all platform. I made a hotfix and uploaded the debugged version right now. I am very sorry, but you should download it again (the build is now 070831). I hope there are no other bad bugs like this.

I don't have words to describe SymbOS

I suggest you use "symbos" as a word.

So when the applications will come ?
Should we start with a symbos DEV competition ?

If you think, this makes sense, I would sponsor something
