Twinbee - rearrange by Wolf

Music - Twinbee - rearrange by Wolf

 Submitted by: AuroraMSX
 Topic: Music

Wolf's latest rearrange is a game from the early Konami years: the vertical MSX1 shooter Twinbee. Rather than his usual near-1:1 rearranges, and rather than a created atmosphere not far away from the original game, this remake is totally different. Partly inspired by music from The Neverending Story, this version is fast, uplifting and loud.

If you have free material for our downloads section which you wish to share with MSX fans around the world, please send it to downloads@msx.org and we will consider your submission. Each addition to the downloads section will be announced in a newspost, and if your entry does well enough: the download will be mentioned in the monthly downloads top 10.

okay, now for real.

As always, Wolf, you have that "relaxed" kinda feel to your tunes. No rush, no big contrasts, smooth and yet dynamic.
These "classical" approaches you've been doing last years really make a difference. This one especially: a good combo of classical vs electro.
Dunno about those "handclaps" tho, they could (atleast) use some reverb or be less obvious in the mix (drop'm a few Db)

The rhythmic part is nice, yet simple. That standard drum pattern works very well, especially those snares in 16th with little accents innit. Nice detail.

thumbs up!

It was first meant as a clone of "Bastian's Happy Flight" from The Neverending Story (by Klaus Doldinger, who also did Tatort and Das Boot), that's why I chose that old drumkit in the first place. The original song also has that ridiculous handclap, so that's why it's in. Eventually I kinda lost the connection with TNS and focused more on a generic big ba(n)d sound with the extensive brass section (3 trumpets, 3 trombones, bass trombone, flugelhorn, 4 horns, tuba).

Updated the link of The Neverending Story to Wikipedia (which provides more info than The Internet Movie Database).

Darn, secretly TNS is a favorite movie of mine. I guess MSX-ers are all the same. Sadly stuck in the 80s

Read the book (by Michael Ende) and after that, you may want to see the movie as well

_wolfgang Amadeus MSX-art, I hoped you'd incorporate the "special" tune and so you did!
That specific theme perhaps could've had some more 'power' IMHO, but the transition is seemlessly.

I wouldn't have thought of it that this type of arrangement would become the original compositions so well !

The hand claps are hilarious!

Please elaborate; you were making the Neverending Story song and suddenly you thought: "Well, it sounds like an opportunity to do TwinBee" ?

Are there MSX bgm's which are still on your wish-list to tackle one day?

Nah, I just started about like 'mmm I feel like doing an mp3 for the new month', I somewhat wanted to do a stone-age Konami game, from the time from before megaroms. But the common problem with all these games is that their tunes are rather short, and I prefer longer tunes as it's easier for me to make a lengthy tune out of it without too much repetition. Just by testing I found out that the Twinbee tune was rather long (well over 1.5 minutes), which is exceptional for Konami. As I don't know/have a BGM player with that music I recorded it while "playing" (no shooting, and avoiding everything) I actually guess only a few ppl have ever heard that whole tune as the game keeps alternating between the main tune and that special tune, as you called it. Anyway, I noticed that the start key was comparable and chord-bass relation was quite comparable (when there's a C chord there's a C bass, when there's an Eb chord there's an Eb bass, just check both tunes (org. twinbee and TNS), this chord-bass thing may sound like a small detail, but such a detail may just be the reason why I've linked Twinbee and TNS. And so I went on forging Twinbee and TNS into something which has elements of both. This mixing of elements of different tunes is something I do (and will do) more often btw..

Well, think of a t20 list yourself and we're prolly not far off.

But for sake of lists, I've 2 lists.

Here's a list with want-to-do-one-day games (complete games btw, not individual tunes)
- Xak123FrayIC
- Shalom (its music may not be very much known, but there's just a lot of musical material in that game, which makes it a good candidate)
- Nemesis123SalaParo
- Randar 3
- DS6
- Usas
- Psycho World (note that it'd be a total rewrite, unrelated to those 4 tunes I've released already (see downloads))
(edit)
- Aleste 1/2/G

And here's the second list, which contains games of which I've already done something (either concrete MP3s or just some preparations)
- SD-Snatcher (this would be a somewhat unusual project btw)
- Starship Rendez-Vous
- Peach Up - Holy Grail
- Universe Unknown, this would actually be forged into the Star Wars style (level 7 is a kicker ).

Composing is not necessarily the most work, finding out the original notes of these hundreds of tunes is. Once I have the notes in place, orchestrating goes rather fast.

I don´t post much in this forum, but I would really like to congratulate Wolf on this achievement. The Twinbee tune went straight to my iPod and I´m listening to it over and over again. I thought it had a "Neverending Story" feel about it, and much to my surprise I found out, by reading the reactions, that the movie really inspired Wolf´s work!
This is EASILY the BEST MSX-related MP3 I´ve ever heard. If Wolf makes a Penguin Adventure mp3 with the same level of inspiration, he will become UNSTOPPABLE!
Once again, congratulations!

Funny, as I really wanted to do level 1.
