| | VScreen Car added to downloads |
| | Wednesday, February 06, 2008 - 16:43 Submitted by: wolf_ Topic: Games & Demos | | Following a request in this forumthread, MRC has added Maggoo's experimental car game example (made with his VScreen engine) to the downloads section. VScreen is an engine aimed to provide smooth full-screen scrolling using screen 4, this could be applied to platform games such as Psycho World, shooters such as Hydefos and any other game which benefits from smooth scrolling.

Go for it, Maggoo & dvik/joyrex!

| By ARTRAG on February 06 2008, 18:25 | 2 player mode? How ? Split screen problems exist also in this case.
Maybe you could do an horizontal split screen using line int, I do not see any other option, but in this case the height of two half screens would be very short and IMHO unsuitable for a top view racing game, where cars move in all directions.
An horizontal split screen would be optimal in a horizontal scrolling game.

You can see a video of the NES version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bNOKmi_i40
So it should'nt be very difficult to do this using Vscreen.... it wold be very nice!

EDIT: Ups! I've seen its already commented in this post: http://www.msx.org/forumtopic8259.html

Anyway the backgrounds that you can do in scr4 and in vscreen are far better and richer than what you can get with scr2. IMHO Micromachines (with its funny traces) would be possible only in msx2 with vscreen.

| By MicroTech on February 07 2008, 11:13 | Cool
Hope it will become a real (MSX2) game!

| By snout on February 08 2008, 16:28 | Vscreen is REALLY impressive. High time a complete game was to be developed with it. Great game, minimum efforts I say.
| | |
| By Maggoo on February 08 2008, 18:06 | Well there is hope, I finally have a place where I can setup my MSX, a monitor for it, AND a little bit more spare time... so keep your fingers crossed :-) First thing first, trying to get the website back online.
| | |
| By snout on February 08 2008, 18:52 | Maggoo : that would be awesome! Of course, the whole idea behind Vscreen is that people other than you will create and release games based on Vscreen as well. High time someone gave it a go, I say!

| By LeandroCorreia on February 10 2008, 18:24 | REALLY impressive! How is posslble that the scroll is smoother than a PC game?
| | |
| By dvik on February 10 2008, 22:01 | It is indeed very impressive. I hope we'll see some games based on the engine soon

| By LeandroCorreia on February 11 2008, 12:43 | Why the scroll is so smooth, and in most 2D PC games, it isnīt?
| | |
| By ivke2006 on February 11 2008, 12:48 | Maybe start a vscreen competition? (if the MCR competition is ended)
I think that's the way to get the scene motivated.

MSX2 has scroll registers, PC videocards prolly not. MSX2 has to move max 54k worth o' pixels, a PC screen is far bigger than that. MSX games run as only application, on recent PC's everything is multitasking, so the game isn't the only thing running (p2p apps, email checks, msn etc.)

Even on DOS PC games running in powerful computers (i.e.: a XT intended game running in a Pentium), games were never so smooth. Besides a VGA game has to move only 64Kbytes in a very sequential manner (one pixel = one byte), and any 386 or above can do it fairly well.
Could the scroll be locked to the video refresh, say, exactly one pixel scroll per frame?

| By LeandroCorreia on February 11 2008, 17:32 | Oh, and BTW, the scroll was smooth in a PC full of background tasks and running an MSX emulator.

| By [D-Tail] on August 10 2008, 21:05 | Could be me, but the games mentioned in the news post are al Hertz's. Coincidence? Hertz, the master of smooth scroll!
