Emulation - fMSX Ported to Internet Tablets

 Sunday, February 24, 2008 - 20:43

 Topic: Emulation

Marat Fayzullin has just released an fMSX port for Nokia N800/N810 Internet tablets running Maemo OS2008. Note that the port is an early beta, so the author appreciates any comments about its stability and features. You will either need an N810 or a Bluetooth keyboard to use it.

So, the exclusive feature of fMSX is being highly portable to various devices with relatively slow CPU and bare C compiler, especially for those with system API that lacks even very basic and standard things (like in case of Rockbox).

What do you mean?

Nokia N800/N810 are the Internet Tablet Multimedia Computer line.

The N800 processor is listed as a TI OMAP 2420 clocked at 330 Mhz. The N810 processor as a TI OMAP 2420 clocked at 400 Mhz.

This is the minimum acceptable for today use.
The resolution of 800x480 touch screen, 16-bit color isn't bad either ...

To bad that I only got a old Nokia N-Gage!!!

Actually, both are running at 400MHz with the new firmware and there are slower systems than that. OMAP1-based Nokia phones typically run at 200+MHz and have 240x320 and 352x416 displays. They can still run MSX emulation.

What kind of OS is available on them? Something weird? Or something that has a POSIX-like environment?
By fms on February 25 2008, 20:35
It is a Debian Linux with a heavily customized Gnome for UI. Command line Unix stuff usually compiles without a glitch, but video, input, and audio require some tweaking.

It doesn't support SDL, e.g.? (In that case it would be very easy to port openMSX to it as well... openMSX runs fine on a GP2X, but that's on a lower resolution.... Does the N800 have some kind of support for scaling in hardware?)
