| Buggy YS 1 translation
| fondacio msx lover Posts: 103 | Posted: July 07 2003, 23:21   | Already a while ago, I found a .dsk image of Ys 1 which had been patched with the Oasis translation and started playing it. Some of the texts produce drawing errors on the screen. In Darm Tower, at a certain point finding an item freezes the game and the text box doesn't show correctly. I also had the savedata for the enddemo sitting around somewhere (ANCIENT.BAS listing from the Peeks, Pokes en Truuks book if anyone remembers), so I tried to view it that way. It worked, but the books of YS are unreadable in the final screen. Does anyone here know whether the Oasis translation programme was buggy or whether my patched .dsk image is just crappy? I'd be grateful to know.
By the way, in the English translation of Ys 2 some Japanese text near the end demon also remained untranslated. Maybe the makers of the patch didn't bother to play through the entire game...

BTW, Oasis' Ys translations have a 'bug' in the naming of one of the characters. The translator discovered his mistake during translation of Ys 2, but decided to name the character wrong in Ys 2 too for consistency. (In stead of distributing a fix for Ys 1 translation)

Back then, a prize was awarded to the person who first reported an untranslated part to a Oasis member. I don't know if there were many people aware of this, but I have been the first to mention those things to Oasis for a couple of times. I received most of Oasis' patchdisks, therefore, for free (since that was the prize that could be won). It might be that Oasis did these things on purpose, since almost all the games came with one (and just one) untranslated text box. | |
