You are right, the sound on dreamMSX sucks, but the graphic is ok. I've finished Metal Gear 2 with no problems. I wonder if Dreamcast could handle an advanced msx emulator like NLMSX...

It should be possible to develop an advanced MSX emulator for Dreamcast, because this machine is very powerful. The MSX Association has also the project to make an Dreamcast version of the MSX-PLAYer.
By the way, the future MSX 3 could be a kind of super Dreamcast : this idea was explained on a Japanese site, that is now disappeared ...

(edit)

No, this site is still in life. Thanks Google again !

hehe those newMSX designs were very early (2000 IIRC) designs by Keita Goto of things he had in mind. About 12 different ideas. Got close to nothing to do with the current one-chip-MSX ideas

DreamMSX? try fMSX DC!

I'm planning on putting together a FAQ/HOWTO about fMSX DC, but I need to do a LOT of testing!

If you have suggestions which software/game I should test, please s.l.lammertsma@hccnet.nl mail me.

As soon as the FAQ is in a nice state, I will put it on The Darkness God Of Destroy for download.

What?! The DC has been dead for 2 years now. I love the Dreamcast, but I cannot see why MSX Association would consider making MSX Player for Dreamcast.

DEAD?!

much like MSX then...

Sorry, but do you USE your MSX? I do, so I don't consider it dead

Do you use your DC? Did you know in Japan there are still games released for the DC? Like Ikaruga, Border Down, King Of Fighters? Sure, they cost a limb to import, but there's still life left!

BTW, have you got Feet Of Fury? It's cool! If you like dancing games, that is...

I have recently placed another order for some Japanese DC games (they're much cheaper that the PAL versions, even when importing!) and I'm not planning on giving up a system I get a lot of fun out of.

So I will keep my 'ancient' computers and use them until I die (or get demented, which I don't hope!)

I am well aware of the few games still being released for Dreamcast. However, we're talking very small numbers here. And Japan-only.

This discussion is not about whether you should enjoy MSX or Dreamcast, of course you should. In my opinion it's a shame SEGA had to pull the plug on its hardware iterations. The Dreamcast still stands as one of the best consoles, even today, amongst PS2, GC and XBox. It's just not being heavily supported anymore.

That's why I think it's a waste of time to port MSX Player to Dreamcast. It should be made for the most popular console first, which definitely is the PS2. That's the only way to reach a wider audience.

As an amateur, yes, you're fully entitled to port MSX Player to an obsolete platform. As a professional association like ASCII/MSX Association you're plain stupid.

The plans to port MSXPLAYer to Dreamcast were made in 1999-2001. I don't think MSX Association is still planning this port.

Exactly my thoughts.

So it will be made for the most popular console, PS2?

So when (if at all) will there be a PAL release? Propably late as always.

Just saying that even if a PAL version IS made, getting hold of it proves to be a bit hard (unless you have your PS2 chipped and play pirate copies).

And, what will it cost? Current PS2 games sell for ca. 60 EUR, which is a lot of cash for an emulator. Especially if it will be like the MSX Antiques Collection Konami released in 1998 for the PSX.

Okay, it's great if it happens, just don't get your hopes up. I only use fMSX DC because I CAN. And it beats using a beefy brick with either windows or the setting up Linux-configurations.

btw: 'The strangest name of all MSX websites' ? I like that!

DreamMSX burning & booting

(c) November 2003 by BodyHammeR

After recieving an e-mail from Brazil, i conjured up the following to help
that person out a bit. It seemed daft not to post this because it could also
help other people.

You have a CDROM directory in your dreammsx.zip?
What's in that?

I do not have a cdrom dir in my DreammsxMAE.zip...

Let's start by asking if you have read the README.TXT.

Basically it goes like this (digest of the README.TXT):

* Get the latest DreamMSX (MAE - Marco Aurelio Edition, the one I have)
* Get the Utopia Bootdisk (latest version is v1.2)
* Get some MSX games (.ROM and/or .DSK files)
* Put the following files in the ROOT of the CD

1st_read.bin
ip.bin
disk.rom
msx2.rom
msx2ext.rom

* Put your favourite MSX .ROM and .DSK files in the ROOT of the CD

mgear.rom
aleste.dsk
rc-741.rom
gojira.rom
etc...

* Make sure you have a maximum of 256 files in the ROOT of the CD

* Make sure the filenames do not exceed 14 characters

* Burn the CD:

Mode 1
ISO Level 2
Joliet

* Boot your Dreamcast with Utopia

* Swap with your new DreamMSX CD

That's it!

You do not have to create any (sub)directories apart from the one that you use
as 'dummy CD directory' to manage the files you want to burn.

Using Selfboot:

* Install Selfboot using the Selfboot.exe

* Put the files (as with the Utopia method) in the SelfbootDATA directory

* Run Selfboot

I have not tried Selfboot with DreamMSX, so I don't know if it will work.

Be sure your Dreamcast can boot CD-R's'. If you have burned other CD-R's for
your dreamcast (Like DCPlaya, a very nice musicplayer) and they work ok, your
Dreamcast should boot CD-R's. Be aware that some homebrew software has
specific demands with regards to ISO levels, filename-length and booting-
tools. Please read the instructions that came with the Dreamcast program or
check the author's website or one of the 'homebrew community' websites for
more help.

I hoped to have been of any useful assistance!

BTW: Try fMSX DC Beta 1 (latest known version). It supports MSX1, 2 and 2+ and
runs smoothly when burned with Selfboot.

I hope to get the MSX on Dreamcast FAQ (or HOWTO, or whatever it will be
called) available from my website as soon as I have figured out the
(non)workings of both software. As this calls for some serious burning and
booting, this will take a lot of time. I will not release a 'pseudo'-FAQ, with
odds and ends and loads of unclarities because that will help no-one.

I am thinking about putting together a ready-to-burn ISO containing fMSX DC Beta 1 and a shitload of freeware/pd games for those who cannot stand the thought of going through the hassle of creating a Dreamcast CD-R. The only problem would be I have to include the MSXsystem ROMs (which are copyrighted).

And I'll waste a load of CD-R's trying to get a full-working ISO together .

Please let me know your thoughts on this (please not only about the system ROMs issue, I know piracy is bad ).

If a moderator feels like moving this to a new topic, please do so as these last two posts do not concern dreamMSX, but the far better fMSX DC.
But be so kind to leave the Sept. 13 post here, as it concerns the burning/Selfboot/HOWTO topic.
