D00ds i am actualy posting the kind of post that never gets answers or feedback but no matter, i feel like i have to do it :

I am seriously thinking about seeking peoples to make a remake or why not directly a sequel to Penguin Adventure !

Consider this : this game is the only one of his kind and nothing serious realy came out after it...

The idea is simple : OpenGL / DirectX stages while sprites are kept for the penguin, fishes and stuffs that might look better this way... A total 3D game could be done using a way similar to Zelda Windwaker but i don't expect getting in touch with such skilled guys for 3d modeling and stuffs.

So think seriously about it...

Like you, i liked the original VERY MUCH, it's such a master piece, anything i'll do concerning a sequel, a remake or whatever, i want it to be AT LEAST as good as the original or i'll don't do it... Those kind of games are worth the best !

Hey plz, I am not here to argue about " remake sux " or " non official sequels are gay " or anything like that...

I want to do it period...

It is indeed an excellent idea. It remembers me to old files at the proposal directory of the HispaMSX FTP. It has some images of what "would be" a remake of certain MSX games into MSX 2/2+ games (using the V9938 or the V9958). Here they are:

Penguin Adventure:
Original Penguin Adventure
Penguin Adventure with Enhanced MSX 2 graphics
Water stage of Penguin Adventure with Enhanced graphics

Here is the translation from spanish of some ideas to made it:
Quote:

Here is a proposal for our beloved Game Programmers:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Penguin Adventure
Year:1986
Company:Konami
Media:Cartucho ROM
System:MSX1
Language:Japanese/English
Video:NTSC
Type:Accion - Arcade
Audio: PSG
Input:Teclado - Joy1

It could be enhanced to a MSX 2 Version, using the features of the YAMAHA VDP9938:

Screen 4 --> More colors for "CHRS"
Screen 4 --> SPRITES MODE 2 --> until 3 colors for line/SPRITE
128K VIDEO RAM --> Storage of landscape (3D/Zoom Effect)

Also, we could enhace the sound and the music using the features of KONAMI SCC Audio Chip:

Channel A (PSG) --
Channel B (PSG) ---> SFX
Channel C (PSG) --/

Sample A (SCC) --
Sample B (SCC) --
Sample C (SCC) ---> BGM
Sample D (SCC) --/
Sample E (SCC) --

I guess that this proposal is so old, but when I saw this topic, I remember it so much...

[edit]Updated links to the screenshots, now they work fine (13/02/2005)[/edit]

Sounds interesting!!

Unfortunately I can't participate in that project, I already have so many things to do (work, other projects, etc). Would only slow down the progress..

So.... Do you need beta-testers?

Seriously, I don't get PC remakes...
If you want to create a cool MSX game, create it for MSX.
With the right programming, MSX is more than capable of approaching even modern non-3D hardware.
Penguin Adventure II should be on MSX2 or even MSXturboR with Gfx9000!

By looking at these screenshots it's absolutely awesome to see how the game could be enhanced. Actualy those who have some difficulties to imagine should look at them...

With a good 3d engine and similar gameplay it would be definitively some incredible gaming experience.

The old story wasn't that complex so making a new one that won't betray the original mood should be ok.

I had some problems to download the screenshots karloch
so i uploaded them to my server, those who experienced problems can go there :

Sounds great!!!! A sequel or a remake of PA should be amazing, like the original...

I prefer PAII on PC or PC & MSX, cause there's a lot of people, like me, that we have only MSX1... i'd like to have a MSXtR Gfx9000 and Moonsound but it's a bit difficult and PC emus works well. Perhaps with the new MSX onachip

I totally agree here! Although I think the game should run on a basic MSX 2 (might be cool to add MoonSound music )

Nice GFX anyway. Are these PC drawn pix?
If it was cell based (tiles) MSX2 paints, I would really want this dude to contribute some for Fubsy...sight

I actually don't know how are drawn there images of the enhanced Penguin Adventure, maybe that some OLD celebrity of HispaMSX could tell us. As it says in the document, it is thought to be a remake of Penguin Adventure for MSX 2 computers with SCC, not a PC remake.

I would like much more a MSX 2/2+ (even a GFX9000!) version than a PC remake, but PC remake could be so cool as J-War described.

I think nowadays MSX could be turn into a powerful hardware, in combination of MSX Turbo-R with GFX9000. I already said that in another thread... Main lack of the Turbo-R is his VDP (V9958) that was already deprecated when T-R came out... A R800 with a good and faster VDP like the V9990, would make the MSX see things never seen before.

A GFX9000 costs about 120 euros if I'm right, and if demand would be high, I guess that sunrise would produce more units... But, ok, I understand that all of this is only an utopia...

I prefer an MSX2 remake as well, but a turboR/GFX9000 remake (or any other turboR/GFX9000 game) would be awesome.

Latest price was 135 euros I think..
And it's not a utopia to believe sunrise will produce more units when there is enough demand. AFAIK (and I don't really know ^^ the demand for new moonsounds must be 20.

Anyway, Gfx9000 totally rules!

No no! The utopia is that everybody want to buy a GFX9000 xD

If you're going OpenGL, I'm interested. I have some experience with OpenGL, but only 2D so far (openMSX has a GL renderer). However, I do understand the mathematics of 3D, so I should be able to pick up the practical aspects with some practice. Note: since I will continue to spend time on openMSX, don't count on me as the only programmer, but I think I could be a useful addition to a team.

I would prefer a new game in the same style, not an exact remake, to avoid any possible copyright problems. Also, it is probably more interesting for developers and for players to try out some new ideas.

Penguin Adventure was using fake 3D, with real 3D the zooming could be a lot more fluent which can make it look really good. But you need to find someone who can make good 3D models...

A game starring a penguin will certainly be popular among Linux users. But the penguin hero for this game should not have a beer gut

Weeeellllll.....

I disappeared for a looong time.... and it was for a reason =)
I had an small "game programming course" here in Brazil - and as a final "test" we had to make a one-level demo, a game without violence, etc...

Well, my "almost-done" demo, which scored 1st place on the competition, and an indication to be chosen as a "game to be professionaly developed"... is called..... "Penguin Racer"!

Guess where I took the inspiration to do it? =)

I just ask to please *DO NOT* talk about this yet on the main page, there is some bugs I have still to sort it out, and lots of stuff to improve.

Btw: the demo was done mainly by myself with the help of 2 other guys, in more or less than a month... and thanks to it I may become a professional game developer... =))

Well, take a look and tell me what your feelins are about it ^_^

*edit*
Geee... all this non sleeping till the demo is finished on time might have melted my brain, I totally forgot to post a link!!!

That's it!!
