So actually they're just using Kanji's for words that sound like western words? It seems I was looking for a way more complicated explanantion for it

Nope, this is the only explanation. There are, however, more pronunciations of some kanji in Japanese as well. It depends on the kanji. And if I remember correctly, the kanji for snake (hebi) is used in the Salamander title indeed (the last character, of which the on-yomi (Chinese reading) is 'da').

At the moment, I don't remember with which kanji the title Contra was written, but as far as I know there is little or no meaning to the kanji used. It probably just looked cooler than using katakana

Agreed, definately not Rambo-ish. But basically that's because of Virt (Jake Kaufman)'s excellent Contra-remix. And yes, that remix is all "hard-rock guitars, synths and blazing drums".

virt.ph34r.net/music/v-contra.zip, I believe.

Contra is a word, it means:
adv contra, contrariwise, adversely. • prep against, counter to, contrary to, versus.

Well...the question is about the "atmosphere" of the game...well...

Some said "aliens","Rambo".... If I made some music arragments for a game like that I would go on...Ethnic Percussion and some voices, kinda Eric Serra ( but no so slow tempos ),and a bit of ambient and look-like beat-rock like Trevor Rabin ( I love this man!).The easy way is going to use some licks in Goldsmith style´s ( just like in Solid Snake,as you said ),I will bet on that.

Well, that´s my way to look at it.

Letting discussions about the original game name aside, I would like to hear an alien like arrange of contra better than a military one. Although I heard your orchestral/military version of Metal Gear Tara Theme (wich I liked much), I think that contra is much like an alien like game more than a military one. This makes me think about Predator movie. The ambience is the same, it seems to be a mixture of both themes, but the arguments leads to the story of an alien fighter, a hunter that tries to find his best enemy through all the galaxy. It is not like alien movies, which is clearly futuristic, but if I had to choose, I do the alien way.
Anyway, a good arranger would not matter to start a military theme and then slightly pass to an alien theme.

Regards, David.

Speaking about the meaning of the word "contra", in the beginning of 20th century the word "contra" was used in Russia as short version of "counter-revolutionary" - in short, those, who were against the Great October Revolution :-)

afaik Gryzor is the name of the game on other platforms.

Afaik Probotector was the title used on the Nes consoles

But I never got the grips on Contra .. you see a Rambo-style player (muscle-arms etc.) running in a hi-tec enviroment (the underpasses etc.). Parts of the gfx remind of the cold war, but for the rest, it's all a mixed bag of styles.

I always thought that the imagination of coders good be pretty weird. But mixing styles can be succesfull. Look at this forum. They all know contra

But then again, for me it doesn't really matter if is oldstyle vietnam or hi-tech. If the game's playable and has nice graphics, and music to complete the sphere.. Then it is ok.

But when people start mixing styles in the game, they should, or could, add a different music style to it. No big deal. If the spehere is good, and the mood is ok.. And I'm still playing the game, then it is ok for me

But the combination of Mozart and Space Manbow does not compute... Beep.. Error..

The videogame is the cause of all social mischief nowadays. Parents don't need to take care of the upbringing of their children, as long as they don't play videogames. Argh!

But okay, it's getting a little offtopic here, if anyone's interested in discussing about this subject, I propose we make a new topic about that in the 'social talk' section.

What are you waiting for... Go ahead, I'm pretty curious about opinions on that as well.
