Fast paced news posts! They're a bother!

Well, uh, the news posts are currently going so fast, it is hard to keep up with. Not only now, but also other times this has been the case. Currently, someone who doesn't visit msx.org multiple times a day can hardly keep up! And the news archive isn't very user-friendly, so it's not nice to have to resort to that.

So, I'd vote for more news posts on the frontpage (maybe 5 big ones and 8 small ones?) (or even 4 big ones would help). And a possibility to 'go back a page' with a couple more news posts instead of having to use the news archive.

As I know that takes some effort to implement (especially the 2nd), my suggestions for the near future:

1. use the 'small' news posts more often, a big 'un for each snowfall entry was overkill.
2. in cases like this, where there is a great amount of news posts on the same topic, why not create one single news post about it, and everytime a new entry is submitted, just edit and add it to the post and bump the entire thing up to the top of the frontpage? So in the end there will be a post along the lines of...

Quote:

Snowfall Challenge

And just now the 22nd entry for the Snowfall Challenge came in!

24. Snowfall Challenge demo - by Jalu
This entry features bladibla...

(p.s. where is no. 23? or are your basic math skills degrading? if it were no. 13, I could understand, but...)

22. Glop - by Wolf

21. ...
etc.

General text about submission and final entry date/time

Or if you think those single posts get too big, you can split them up in multiple posts, but at least combine it a little...

Ah, there it is . Nice, to post about the 24th entry *before* the the 23rd... Hehehe...

Hmm, counting... It can be hard sometimes to remember the right order, isn't it...

2 things:
1. news archive
2. visit more often

Seriously, nobody can keep up with the flood of snowfall entries right before the deadline, but as MRC stated it's totally unexpected.
Who knows, maybe snout will be able to code something special for things like this... In any case, it doesn't bother me. I'm glad to see there are so many entries!

One post appearing faster then the other is what you get when you work with more then one editor at the time.

Anyways, if we reported about entry no. 1 in a nice post, we must also post about entry no. xxx in a nice post. Too bad that results in a fast flow of newsposts. How many times do we get a software-boom in the MSX scene nowadays anyway? I like this challenge, and I like the fuzz around it even better

But thanks for your views, that's always appreciated. But you know that!

I suggested something on irc before iirc, about those music covers back a few months ago, they were also popping out like cheaploans-companies

a small overview list at a side with the title only, and perhaps a longer frontpage?

Well, the last two entries did get smaller posts... ^_^ Not fair!

Anyways, I don't think the 'bump up updated post' idea was considered before, so maybe you could use it in the future. And a longer frontpage... yes please! (that one shouldn't be too hard... no?)

and smaller titles perhaps ..

I mean: "17th contribution to the MRC showfall compo" ..

..yeahyeah ..

"snow #17"

you can store way more titles like this, and generally it reads a bit better imo

Lets face it. It's 2004. More than 20 years after the birth of MSX, a system considered obsolete and dead by a lot of people. Still, we're worrying about the fact there's a lot of news coming in?

We'll have a look at our frontpage layout, see what we can improve and euhm... sooner or later change a thing or two.

Well, they could counter that effect by removing all the excessive tables crap and start using clean HTML with CSS ... Well, I *do* think it will matter a lot. Let's hope such a makeover is included in the big optimization thing Snout mentioned.

Of course it will matter a lot, but it also takes me HOURS and HOURS to change these things (and they will be changed, one day . At the moment, I spend little time coding for the MRC. I think my time is better spent with content management at the moment. However, I'll try and see if I can get some 'development days' soon .

if they accommodate the news for sections and do they make a page of news for each section and do they place in the main one an index to the sections?. because a user can be interested in hardware section only for example.

I vote for that.
