The Panasonic FS-a1GT MSX turbo R computer has built-in MIDI.

Furthermore, several external MIDI interfaces for MSX are made:
  • Philips NMS-1205 Music Module
  • FAC MIDI Interface
  • Bitē MIDI-Saurus
  • Joystick port MIDI

You can make a connecter by using a double sided prefab print with 60 strips.
TheYamaha have 60 connections, while other MSXes use 50 connections.
Beware that the dimensions of the print and connections are exact the size of a MSX slot.
If the connecter is ready, then you must be very careful if you insert the connecter in your MSX, connection nr 1 on 1 etc, if you insert the module wrong then you blow up at least your soundmodule.
If you'r not know what you'r doing then do nothing.
Take also a look at the homepage of Eric Lie for more information.
Here you have the url.

FYI, FAC MIDI-interface does not support processor interrupts, and neither did the joystick MIDI interfaces published in japanese MSX Fan magazine.

i Studies Electronics and Computers at College and Uni
some time ago now

also did Microelectronics when at college

I dont know MSX that well the only ones ive seen in the FLESH
are the Toshiba TX10 and the Yamaha CX5M
and they both looked alike from outside

i didnt look under the Toshiba one
and was always led to belive that the MSX was the Daddy of the Moden PC
with its extra bits

Also noticed that the Sound Card on the CX5M comes out
and has a slot type port !!!

why is this for upgrading .. or the other reason would be i could use it on other MSX systems but they seem to be all pretty much different

As far as i know have only the Yamaha not the same slots as other MSXes.
Only the slot on the top is a standard MSX slot, the slot on the rear needs a genderchancer, but has the standard 50 connections.
The soundcard has 60 connections, if you will use it in a other msx, than you can make a connecter by using the first 50 connections.
because you did electronics, it must easy for you to fix this, if you have the right documentation.

I remember that one of the UK MSX magazines had a PCB layout to build an adaptor - but I have no idea where it is or whar magazine it was! Sorry! It basically was a gender changer for the PCB.

You will be able to use any MSX with the Yamaha sound cartridge SFG01/SFG05 if you construct an adaptor.

In the 1980's Yamaha used the pop artist Nik Kershaw in there advertising for the CX5M as far as I remember.

If you can find a CX5M/II I'd buy it, it is a neater macine than the CX5M, 128k of memory, and easy to upgrade to MSX2 (some new VRAM and ROM's ) The link from Hans O site does not seem to be working.

All good fun

I think the CX5M/II should also be able to handle a Sunrise CF adaptor, that would be a neat peice of kit

Bye for now

There is a website with a disgram of a cartridge adaptor for a SFG01/05 to connect to any MSX computer

www.rgp.nl/cx5m/adapter.htm

Yep seen that site .. talked to the owner too
if you chop the first 10 pins off the Yamaha SFG connention you wouldnt effect the sound card
as from the look of the circuit diagram there not used

I dont know about other MSX Extension Side Slot to know any more on how they work

The first 50pins on the 60pin connector on the CX5 are the same as a normal MSX cartridge, I knew of people in the 1980's who made that PCB and used the Yamaha SFG-0x with a Sony HB75 to name but one machine.

My expanded slot has an FM-PAC, and a SCC without any problems I have never used a SFG-0x music module, if I find one I might try it one day. Although it would have to be very inexpensive!

well thats a bit scary then .. as the circiut Diagram of the SFG0x has it at the end 50 pins
unless the guy numbed them up wrong
