Hi all. I've done another little hardware modification, this time
upgrading the ROM of a Yamaha SFG-01 FM Sound Synthesizer Unit to that of
a Yamaha SFG-05 FM Sound Synthesizer Unit II. This was a little more
complicated than simply exchanging the ROMs, since the SFG-01 uses a 16K
ROM and the SFG-05 uses a 32K ROM. Address line A14 from the cartridge
connector is soldered to A14 on the EPROM.

Yeah, unfortunately Richard was forced to leave the MSX scene a while ago, I believe due to personal circumstances.

Try http://www.archive.org to see if they got a backup of his site stored.

There are more differences between SFG-01 and SFG-05 tho, the SFG-05 comes with a YM2164 FM chip, of which nothing is known, except that it's YM2151 compatible. Presumably the YM2164 contains more waveforms, but there is no conclusive evidence for this. In any case, extra features (if any) are not used by any software (yet).

This has been on my TODO list for a few years already! Hopefully I'll get the time to check it out.

ok i've seen the site before and dont realy know my way around to find what im looking for

As for the chips .. i didnt know that .. i talked to a kidd i got the Circuit from and said the only change was the ROM chip reall and what i read about it going from 16k to 32k would say the same thing ROM

the Chip you are talking about the YM2151 OPM
and the YM2164 OPP chip
and looking on my NEW FAV Site ya correct
but i dont seem to have any data for the YM2164

Well ive just asked YAMAHA for the info and were to buy the chip.

But did see this chip a YM2413
http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/lsi/prod/pdf/sgl/212413B20.pdf
I think it takes out the YM2151 YM3012 and the Ocillator X1 (4MHz)

YM2413 is MSX-MUSIC. It's a low-cost OPL2 based chip. (OPLL)

If you find out anything about YM2164, let me know, please.

The other thing is how to get hold of the chip if we can get it to work / upgrade

IBM PC Sound Cards or old Music keyboards that are damaged and could nick the chip off
i dont think Yamaha will sell us one offs

Ive been trying to look around for the chip
http://www.synrise.de/docs/types/a/adlib.htm
but i dont do german !!

i think there maybe some YM2151 on some ARCADE boards

"The Yamaha YM2164 OPP was used in the Yamaha SFG-05 FM Sound Synthesizer Unit II and the Korg 707 keyboard synthesizer. I believe it is an improved version of the YM2151 OPM, compatible with YM2151 software."

Wounder if any of thm used a YM2164?
Found this site
http://www.candisc.com/ranger/stock27.htm
ive asked how much 10 of them YM2164 chips would cost

YM2164; DP-80; 4 OP / 8 VOICES

If I'v been informed well, the YM2151 is also used in the 8 bit Sega arcade board.

Yep..
In fact, Richard was planning to adapt the Outrun ROMs to play music on MSX.
Sega System 16 uses a Z80 for sound and YM2151 for FM. It plays drums using a custom 16-channel PCM chip, but should be fairly easy to convert to OPL4.

I'm sorry AngelLaHash, but if you feel that one of our admins or moderators is doing something wrong you can contact us instead of calling him/us names on our forums. Furthermore, if you stick to our forum policies you most likely won't be moderated in the first place.

Just in case you're wondering: the german text you posted in our dutch forums is about an ordinary soundcard, supposedly being based on the YM 2164. However, Adlib is (like the text states earlier) OPL2 so this is probably quite a big mistake. I think the 2164 is SFG-only
