Hi! friends I've got a Philips MSX2 NMS 8245 and a NEMESIS 3 SCC Cartdriges with switch disable ROM.
Nemesis 3 work perfectly, but the other SCC games like F1SPIRIT, SALAMANDER ECC.
don't work with scc sound and I must press CTRL at boot to work with no sound.
May be 128KB RAM +128 KB VRAM are insufficient?
If yes What I need to increase the ram to work with F1SPIRIT?

Thanks a lot.
Roby.

Reading you're talking about crack games they usually require the SCC cartridge in a specific slot. There are not much of these versions having a SCC detection as nobody was able to detect it those days. And you indeed need more memory to be able to run them with SCC.

The best (and legal) way is getting the original titles. These always will have the complete sound.

I can't remember playing f1 spirit and salamander on my old 45 with sound. You need more memory!

iirc these (disk) scc games don't have sound with 128kb ram:

nemesis 3
nemesis 2
salamander
space manbow
f1 spirit
quarth (I once heard it only needs 16kb extra ram, is that correct?)
solid snake (tho the whole game prolly doesn't work with 128kb )
prolly pennant race 2 as well ..

and these games work with sound iirc:

parodius
sd-snatcher
baseball
contra/gryzor
and that game-collection extra with souped-up versions of old PSG games ..

additions anyone ?

At my compressed megaroms page you can find all the needed info.
Can't post the address because of the msx.org policies.

King's Valley 2 works as well! MSX1+2. Secret stages were ripped though...

For the list:
Quote:

nemesis 3
nemesis 2
salamander
space manbow
f1 spirit
quarth (I once heard it only needs 16kb extra ram, is that correct?)
solid snake (tho the whole game prolly doesn't work with 128kb )
prolly pennant race 2 as well ..

you mostly need 256 to run the cracked versions without any probs (don't know about quarth).
Solid Snake however needs 512Kram to play with sound, but 1 Mbram improves the decompression speed.

Most MSX1 catridge only needed 16 till 64KRam (Nemesis 2 and Nemesis 3 work on an MSX1 (VG8020 was it?) with 64Kram.

I don't know what the specs are for MSX2 catridges, however, most MSX2 computers came with 128KRam, so therefor I whould say you'll need 128KRam for MSX2 catridges...

Most of "no sound on 128K RAM machines" cracks of Konami's usually need only 16-32K more, but did you ever see MSX2 with 144 or 160 kbytes of RAM ? That's why they require 256K, IMHO.

OK Thanks to all, but What shall I do to add more memory on 8245?
Should I remove and solder new memory chip?

Thanks.

Ok Wolf, I visit http://www.hansoranje.demon.nl/, but I don' understand anything because the language is not English... but
Is not more sample replace the memory chips of 8245 with more capacity chips?
What is a memory mapper? The 8245 has already a memory mapper?

Thanks.

A memory mapper is a device that maps >64K memory into the 64K Z80 address range. A NMS8245 already has this.
I would advise you to learn some more about the MSX hardware before you try to upgrade the memory yourself.

Thanks GuyveR800, tellme if I understand a thing:
With the original SCC Cartdrige the game is stored in internal ROM (MegaROM) of the cartdrige and forthis, when MSX start with the SCC cartdrige inserted, the game is run from the ROM forthis is need only from 16 to 64Kb of MSX RAM ro play the game.
Instead with SCC dsk games o .rom image games, to play the game is needed to load in MSX ram, but because the .rom is 128 KB, all the memory of 8245 is need but there is no extra memery to run the game example with SCC sound.
Right?
The question is: to play example F1SPIRIT .rom image or dsk with sound and with a SCC cartrige inserted in slot 1 or 2 (with ROM game disabled) is ok the 1MB RAM expansion at http://www.hansoranje.demon.nl/? This expansion RAM can be used with other .rom image dsk games from non Konami cartdriges example ASCII?

Thanks.

I hope someone else can reply on it too?

Correct. Though the MSX RAM of 16 KB is enough. There are a few titles which require 32 KB of RAM.

Right?

You are partially right here. Since the memory in akonami megarom cartidge is mapped in 8KB blocks some of these blocks can be used more than once in 16 KB. In reality such thing could be 3 blocks of 8 KB which requires 2 blocks of 16 KB increasing the requirements with 8KB for just that part. In the ideal case you only need 16 KB more for the whole game (the first 16 KB is used to store game variables, the rest is used by the game itself). Usually a crack of a konami megarom requires twice of MSX RAM on the megarom size (128 KB ROM would require 256 KB of RAM to run the crack). Ther are worse cases requiring triple as much MSX RAM for a cracked version. ASCII uses 2 type of megarom sizes, 8 KB and 16 KB. The size of such a rom requires always the same size of RAM + 16 KB (for the system part and game variables).

In most cases 1 MB should be enough for most titles, including many ASCII mapped games.

I change msx computers to more memory

The extension on hanso site are almost impossible to make, because you need a mapper print made by Digital KC in the past.

I change only a few msx computers to more memory anymore.

Not the 8235, but the 8250 -80 is possible.
Look on my website for actual prices.

Maybe this computer is interresting for you:
8250, 2 drives, 7 Mhz, 192 kb Vram, 512 kB rame, fast diskrom, scart-cable.

Mail me if you are interrested. baskornalijnslijper@zonnet.nl
