Many differences between the emulators?

UnregisteredPosted: March 09 2004, 19:50
I heard from a friend that the nlmsx emulator his sound much better is than the paramsx, also.. in the parasmsx you can save where you want (for example in Metal Gear 2) in the nlmsx he just acts like a real msx. He will save the game and when you start Metal Gear 2 you'll start at the nearest checkpoint.
But when I played a few minutes on the nl msx I saw that the the screen blinks for a short time.
I didn't saw this in the ParaMSX emulator.
So.. I'm asking myself.. is there many difference between the quality in the emulators? Which is the best for just playing Metal Gear 2?

There are indeed many differences between the emulators. If I limit myself to the four best emulators, you have the following situation :

- openMSX is the emulator with the greatest accuracy with the real machine, including support of VDP (graphic) tricks .... but this emulator is not user-friendly (no interface, no save states, ...), it requires a powerful PC and the quality of sound is not the best

- NLMSX has a good accuracy, a good interface and an excellent sound, but VDP tricks and save states are not yet implemented

- blueMSX has a good accuracy, an excellent interface, an excellent sound, a good support of many VDP tricks (not all !), you can save the state of the emulation

- paraMSX has a good accuracy, a good interface, a good sound, some VDP tricks are supported, you can save the state of the emulation

As you are interested by save states, a good sound and a good support of the graphic tricks, you should try blueMSX

In bluemsx, you can save where you want in the game, just like in paramsx (but with different keys)

By the way, it's the principe of the save states : you save indeed the state of the emulation with a precised game, it's not the same than the "normal" savings that were programmed by the creators of the game

So, you can more cheat with save states, but it depends also on you to make save states only in the normal checkpoints of the game .... It's your decision ! 8)

Hmm just took a picture of the nlMSX and one of the blueMSX emulator.

You can see a huge difference between them in quality, I dunno but the nlmsx looks much much better! Doesn't it?

You have different options in blueMSX for the video quality, as some people want to have a result like they have with a MSX connected to a TV for example.

What I see is the video option by default. You can change this in Options / Video . Choose as Monitor emulation "None" or "Scale 2x" in place of "Y/C Cable"

Check this article right here on MRC. It's a bit outdated right now, though you can get a pretty well impression of what's out there with their pro's and con's. I hope Sander (snout) will update it soon with the more recent versions of them.

Mars2000you, how could a guy know who plays metal gear II for his first time where the normal checkpoints are?
P.S: what's a "VDP tricks" ?

My VS0080 (or even a CM8802) monitor provides a much better picture than what BlueMSX emulates. Indeed, that looks like very crappy TV output. Only very few people actually used a TV without SCART for their MSX, and I'm willing to bet the majority used proper computer monitors like VS0080, CM8802/10/33...

You're right .... if you don't play first the normal game, you can't know where the normal checkpoints are ... Interesting question !

VDP = Video Display Processor : it's a very important chip in the MSX for all visual aspects

Some examples of VDP tricks : screensplits, horizontal and vertical scrolls

This tricks use all the "hidden" resources of the VDP and require a good timing with the Z80. More VDP tricks good supported by an emulator, better is this emulator for the visual accuracy ...

hmm mars2000you.. When I play Metal Gear 2 on the BlueMSX and I press F6 I can save on my mg2 .dsk file. When I stop the msx emulator and I play the next day I start at the last checkpoint: for example just arrived at the elevator.
So.. Are you wrong or is it also an option to save it with F6?

We have both right

With an emulator, you have extra features but of course, if they are supported, the normal features of the game are also available

So, Metal Gear 2 in blueMSX :

Normal save on disk : Shift+F1 (= the "MSX" F6)
Save state : F8 or AlT+F8
Capture Audio : F6

By the way, the normal saves of Metal Gear 1 are only on cassette, and it's generally not supported by the emulators, but there's a hacked version of Metal Gear 1 that allows you to make normal saves on disk ...
