Hi,

I am totally new to this. I own a Philipps MSX computer which i bought in 1982 or 83, and i have about a 100 games (all originals believe it or not).
Now I thought it would be great to copy the games to My portable PC, but I can´t find a way to do it.
Is there a kind of manual out there which can explian me in steps how to convert the games to my PC?
The emultaor I use is NLMSX V.048 (I donloaded it a couple of weeks ago)

It would be great to play some games like H.E.R.O. or Boulderdash again, with the old a great sound of my 8-bit computer.

Thank you already in advance. And it is great to see that MSX still rules.....

I guess the best way is simply to record them on your PC. Just hook a cassette player up to the sound-in of your PC and record them to a .WAV file. I've never tried it myself, but I've heard it works. I think there's a WAV2CAS util out there that you can use to convert them to .CAS files for use with emulators like NLMSX.

I read in some news or forum post here there's now also a cassette player for PC, believe it or not. I guess you could also buy that if you're a really big fan

Good luck, if you run into any problems just ask around on these forums...

Sample the cassettes using your soundcard. I'm not sure what the sampling resolution and frequency should be, but you can't go wrong with16 bit 44kHz I guess

Emulators like openMSX and MESS can use the .WAV files directly as if they were a real cassette.
Other emulators (e.g. fMSX) use a format called CAS, which is a binary representation of the analogue cassette. Many games use custom loaders that cannot be supported by CAS, but for games who can, it's a more efficient way of storing games.

Programs to convert to and from WAV and CAS are here: http://home.kabelfoon.nl/~vincentd/

.wav is from cassette, .dsk is from diskette. There is no program to convert between them. Although you could do the conversion manually, but this requires knowledge of MSX programming.

How to use wav files in openMSX is explained in the manual:

http://openmsx.sourceforge.net/manual/user.html#tape

You may want to read it completely to get the context
