I think that the MSX Revival will be only reduced to japanese users.Looking at the poor interest - almost noghint - about the opinions of european/american users, they would make tehir party on theri own.

Well,I believed time ago about the MSX Revival could exploit and spread all over the world...but I think that this time is passed.

About your question, the translation for 'opleving' pretty much comes down to 'revival'... Actually, according to my dictionary that's the only translation for it (well, that and 'recovery' when related to economics). So, interesting that you don't consider it a 'revival', but do consider it an 'opleving' .

Yeah, isn't it funny?

Actually, it made me think. I do see a small grow in the number of MSX projects, mainly in Japan and some in Europe and South America. Problem with the word revival is that people go crazy and seem to lose contact with a thing called reality.

In Dutch: I do see a opleving but no herrijzing. Please help me to express that in English, I hope I made myself clear.

People who believe that a new MSX computer is comming: forget it, it's not gonna happen.

People who believe that the MSX-scene is still alive and even a bit kicking: you're probably right.

I started another topic some time ago, about what you call 'revival'. Can't find it at the moment.

You probably mean this topic

But how about the one chip MSX plans.... Of course, you can discuss wether it's an MSX or not, and we have only seen a very simple prototype, but it _is_ there. And the ideas behind it (see: this powerpoint presentation, for instance) are quite interesting and, indeed, feasible.

To all users:

How about the MSX Revival coming to other countries then Japan? Do you believe in an MSX magazine in English? (Or another language), or in Project EGG deploying their activities in an English website? Or in a 20th anniversary MSXPC and Game Reader in English? What about the Robo-Education project?

The opinion of Snout is in my opinion too many oriented that all had to come from Japan.
During my several talkings with Tusjikawa it is clear to me that we not differ that much of opinion as regards hardware based on Ese MSX 2 board. We differ only the use of the processor to use( internal versus external) and the sd/mmc slot I would change for a CF slot.
As result of this we developed the CF-card and adaptor already.
The new mapper we gonna make is based on sdram technical in a FPGA ,so that we can exchange the code and add to his board if he likes.
The USB reader , we have the permission to develop and thus bring it to europe.
I can give no guarantee sofar otherwise I will be hanged-up again.
Besides the Ese MSX-2 board has meanwhile had some updates as regards the fmpac (reported earlier on a topic) , ps2 keyboard update as well as an update for the VDP

As regards project EGG as well what msx association does is a question of promotion into europe and trying to get it overhere by importing stuff by willing people ( Lay e.g. 40 copies of a MSX magazine on the table, make it possible to buy via EGG-show the way)
If no one sees how he can get something or see something laying on the table forget it that people believe it.

I would like to see a professional MSX magazine again. Since the disappearance of MCCM in The Netherlands and Hnostar in Spain there has been a long "unprinted" silence. Of course a new professional MSX magazine should be published in English.

Most of you will say: "Why a new MSX magazine when we can find tons of MSX related news in the Net?"

Well, the information in Internet is highly volatile; don't expect to find something that is in the Net today 10 years later. A printed magazine, contrary, is forever.

Sonic, what about Compile? Does that work for you?

I'll settle for Compile... sure... Gotta love Aleste... Oh, and Gorby... That one was phun too... Never been much of a Puyo fan though... Oh... And Runemaster was phun too (that was Compile, right?) and the intro demo of Golvellius 2(?) looked cool on my Turbo-R too..... Yeah... Compile will do just fine...

I think that a lot of good can come out of an MSX revival. It seems that a lot of video game revivals have been happening lately. The Atari 2600 is getting a lot of attention in the US. There also seems to be a Famicom revival going on in Japan as well. I think the main reason people are starting to play these old systems again is simple. Games in the 80's and early 90's were more fun than the games of today. Game play was more important than graphics. I think people might be starting to realize this. I would love to see new games for new systems taking a queue from some of the older games.

A revival for completely nostalgic purposes would be a waste though. Hopefully the MSX will find new fans that are interested in the game play as opposed to the novelty value. I just discovered MSX about a year ago myself, and I spend a lot more time playing games on it then I do on my PS2 or PC.

In order to have a revival, the thing in discussion has to existed somewhere to begin with. In the case of the U.S., not much MSX stuff was ever released here Generally, though, I suspect that there would be at least a couple thousand people interested in a U.S. version of an MSX system (outside of the two Yamaha machines released years ago). (I own a CX5M myself.) The larger problem I see with a "revival" here (in the U.S.) is that most people don't know what an MSX is or why they would desire such a machine.

Personally, I would LOVE to see a large amount of MSX stuff suddenly availiable here as well as an English language magazine. Most likely, however, it would end up being a niche market sort of production.

This revival thing doesn't convince me too much.

Untill now the revival has bring us few magazines (that I can't read), nice looking PC (with quite a bad update possibility), nice emulator (...but you can download better for free) and now this expencive dongle for games, that has been cracked and spread all over the world already10 years ago.

Sorry, if I sound cynic, but I would hope, that they would start to make something usefull instead of nice looking items for besotted retro collectors.

I thought it would fit here.

In order to make a project like the MSX Revival succeed, funds are necessary. In order to obtain the necessary money and at the same time put the MSX into the spotlights, smaller products for general use have to be made and sold. And it's not wise to try and conquer the whole world with that kind of goods. They are initially meant for the Japanese market. You never start macro, you always start micro. And the MSX Magazines that you can't read can be read by the Japanese (thank god), the MSXPC is a nice goody many Japanese people fancy (a reminder of the good old days) and the MSX Game Reader is an interesting device with which you can actually buy original cartridges (e.g. in second hand stores or via the internet) and play them. Maybe this approach makes the developments so far more understandable .

But maybe it's more important to ask what your interpretation of the MSX Revival is like. We sort of 'copied' the word from the Japanese, and surely there already are signs of an MSX Revival in Japan. Did we bluntly assume exactly the same thing would happen here?

Imho the MSX Revival until now is something different from the Japanese one. Of course there are many connections, but new software appeared lately, veteran MSX users suddenly popped up again, MSX is subject to many new discussions...

And don't forget, projects like these are really time consuming projects.

Ok guys, here's what will happen:
MSX will rule, and you negative folks will eat your words, along with your hats and shoes.

It's not about negative or positive. It's about realism.
