Virus demo is screen 1 (okay it's smoothe..) did you know that the virus demo was also done by Cas Cremers? yeah, you did!

The FAC demos had scrolls, but I wouldn't call them smooth now are they? (written in basic, slow and crappy) True there have been some nice scrollas in the eighties but... No, the starcracks one was really the first SCREEN 5 (more than 8 pix in height) smooth scolla ever seen by me.

I also r'member the PD10 intro by RMF with a HUGE scrolla and some other text display in one screen.. Really stunning for that time!

Screen splitting really become seriously cool when multiple screensplits (or screen line polling) was introduced! Who can't remember them great colour cycles, waves, flips, color displays, interlacing emulations etc. etc.!

btw.. that raises the need for a poll, for the best or trickiest demo-effect ever on an msx2 ..

I'd nominate the transparent "1992 zoom" by ANMA (source of power) ..

Neat effect but it's plain Line commands with (X?) ORing. Was cool to think about it tho...

I liked the popcorn scroller

Nah... They're all just gonna say UR which in my opinion wasn't good at all... (alert, incoming flames!) It had phun effects, but was pretty lousy as a demo... I actually liked metal limit a lot more eventhough its tricks might have been less impressive...

Talking about multiple screen splits, I remember something called "Robosoft Silent Demo", it had lots of color splits, smooth scrolls and stuffs and if I'm not mistaken I first saw it back in 89 or 90... Wasn't that from you ?

BTW, thanks for the comment about ML, coming from the Great Fuzz man it sure means something

The first one ever to ever program screensplits in demos on MSX was probably Stefan Danes ... that's the first time I saw a smooth scroll on MSX (a Starcracks / Micronics intro) . Anyway, he was programming scrolls when the guys from Anma were "still sucking on their mommies tits" (tm)

Best tricks used in demo's is a tough one... Ofcourse Anma did great stuff, and also NOP... But there were many nice demos before that. Hell, I don't even remember al demos I ever saw

I think the most enhanced technical MSX trick was done in Deathtrack

sonyc: Yeah, I was in hiding, or better, in denial to see your fucking ugly face hangin' here around.. butt-naked for the whole world to wittness... you better take care not to make me enter.. if you do, we both might dissapear for ever in them dark caves.. whooahaha (this is just plain ass stupid text... nothing new from the fuzz..)
Hai tobi! u know I love you man... sniff.

Maggoo: Sonyc made the ML remark (about it being the greatest, most beautifull well drawn, musically madness, supercoded fab brilliant greatatesticcaly good demo..).. but he ain't and never will be a true FUZZ. (oh, well unless he promises to stay away from the dark caverns where I so comfortably hide whenever I feel the need to)...
But he's right though. Metal Limit is a true piece of art!

MSX1 splits are very well possible, but that's more or less stuff for Plutonium or equal coders Those Finnish guys, like Bandwagon and Lieves!Tuore would most likely know more about this.

It is explained here.

On the topic of the first screen split... Screensplits were a known technique before MSX2 as well, so coders probably knew it from other systems. When the MSX2 came it had the line interrupt register clearly documented, so I doubt it took very long after the launch of MSX2 for screensplits to appear (and I don't consider it a 'big thing', btw, splits aren't that special) (unless you're talking about the 'first screen split ever' ofcourse, the first person who came up with that deserves a lot of credit ).

It must really be one of the first MSX2 games or demo's which used it. One would imagine a demo to have the premiere, because they're fast to make and usually try to find the limits of the system. On the other hand, there was much to explore for demo makers on the v9938 so splits weren't nessecarily the first to try, and the first series of MSX2's was expensive so not for everyone. And also, perhaps professional game/application producers had access to MSX2 systems a little while earlier than consumers? That happens with consoles nowadays, anyway.

Isn't the first screen split the boot screen of the MSX2 (and later 2+) afterall ?

Surely the MSX2+'s uses screensplits, but it is not the same as the MSX2 one eh... MSX2 one is fairly simple.

Does the Guru Logic intro screen qualify?
