Here's the translation of the page BiFi sent me:

Gradius 2
Important notes about subscription in game contest

Hot advice for enthusiastic Gradius fans.
We'll have a "Gradius 2" game contest for an exibition we'll hold in 2 months from now.
Take a photo of the Game Over and send it to Konami.
You can win fantastic prizes.
The full instructions for subscription are below.

Full Instructions
1. We wish you to take a photo of the screen at the time of Game Over,
just like the screen on the right.
We don't care if you use a fool-proof camera, reflex camera or polaroid.

2. The photo must be necessarily of the Game Over screen.

3. Be careful, photos of screens on the middle of the game will not be accepted.
Be careful, photos taken with the game using Konami's Game Master,
secret commands and so on will be disqualified.
Play fair.

4. Subscription period (posting time will be used)
From 15 of september of Showa 62 (1988) to 15 of november.

5. Subscription destination
101 Tokyo metropolitan area, Chiyoda district, Kanda Kanhou Road, 3-25
Konami Company
Regarding "Gradius 2 Game Contest"

6. Prizes
First place: Original Gradius Director's Chair with your name inscribed.
Second place: Gradius 2 Original Jacket
Third place: Gradius 2 Original Knapsack
From 1st Place to 2000th Place will be issued a licence card with name inscribed.

Tanks to ricbit, I've just received the translation of that part of the manual.

I'll quote from his e-mail:

"It seems to be a checksum of the score, to select which prizes would be offered."

heheh, I was doing the same thing.

Having that whole translation twice is overkill, so I removed that from my post.

Noticing the 3rd point of the full instructions, I'd say there's another Nemesis 2 version roaming the globe which still enables the contest code with the combinations.

I'm loving this.... After 15 years the surprise of a game-contest in Gradius 2...

Every time you think you have heard it all there is a new surprise...

Like the meaning of H.E.R.O.....

Finding the vase in Maze of Galious...

etc....

this, I didn't know!

The VASE of MOG
It's located in the left tower of the castle, in the room with the blue knights. First of all take back world 4. Having done that stand between the first and the second pillar from the right in this room. Point your sword to the left, now strike 3 times with your sword, turn around strike 3 times, turn back to the left and strike again 3 times, lastly jump 3 times. The vase should now appear.

THE DAGGER
Defeat all the bats in this room (near the necklace and the grey helm) , then jump on the lift and press: Right, Down, Left, Up. After you've got it type the code Umbrella (how odd) in a room with bats and watch!

You don't HAVE to kill all bats in the room. It's just much easier to do the sequence on the lft as there are no bats to kick you from it while you're doing it.

thx.
I remember the days where I myself found out about the Cross (secret room) I immediatelly took screenshots (using gamesmaster) and send them to the dutch MSX mag MCCM (or was it still MCM that time?) can't remember if it was printed tho... it was a good time, sight. MOG has always been one of my fave games EVER to play. what a huge succes. Thanx Konami!

Thanks BiFi and Ricbit. Good job. The next step is to know where is "James Burton" and his Director's chair , the winner score...
