I'll start thanking them as soon as the FAT16 version arrives

Just too bad that Improve can't handle FAT16, AFAIK.

Hence the 'disk error'-message when you try to do so

@legacy: Have you also tried EVAWIN04.EXE? It's the genuine EVA replayer for windows. It sucks big time

I haven't, because I downloaded the packages yesterday, and I didn't have time to look at it.
One of these days, I try them out.

Compactflash is your friend.

By default EVA player does not work with CF. Here are instructions, how to patch EVA player to work :

Ver: 0.08 Offset #57A (#B7 -> #AF)
Ver: 0.09b Offset #57C (#B7 -> #AF)
Ver: 0.10 Offset #5C2 (#B7 -> #AF)

The problem it self is caused by the fact, that CF cards don't respond to ATA identify device command (#EC)

I think it's time to improve EVA format! I don't know how, but I think EVA is one of the gratest things of MSX system! And I think that a screen 8 version to play videos at 256 colors could be interesting!

EVA player can replay also SCREEN 8 EVA files, you just need to use "/8" switch. As far as I know, there is no tools to make SCREEN 8 EVA files (I have not tested the original EVA recorder for MegaSCSI) but S12 EVA -> S8 EVA converter should not take more than hour to write. The format is simple and well documented.

But you can use the CF card to copy EVA files from pc to the MSX hd

Sound is put through the Y8950 (MSX Audio), COVOX or Turbo R PCM. AFAIK it's 15.75 kHz mono sound. Framerate can be 10 or 12FPS (depends on conversion mode (see the -FPS12 )). Resolution is 128x106 (exactly 1/4 of a normal screen mode). If you want to keep aspect ratio, you might as well want to convert to 128x96. A picture of the COVOX is here:

I took it from some internet site, but I cannot recall which

FIRST OF ALL!, that RESISTOR VALUES ARE NOT STANDARDS, so you can't buy that resistors..

And second of all the design of the circuit don't work at all because is for nothing acuracy, because got a capacitive grounding as a 0 value relation voltage.

The standard way to do that is:

D0  D1  D2  D3  D4  D5  D6  D7
!   !   !   !   !   !   !   !
--R---R---R---R---R---R---R-------------------------C --- OUT
                                           !    !
                                          2R    CF
                                           !-----!
                                        ------    GROUND

Whe R are RESISTORS and 2R is a resistor of the double value of R.

And C is a capacitor of audio like 1uf or less

R can be 4.7kohm and R2 can be 10K, but that depend of the input impedance of the amplifier that you want to connect in order to get a correct volumen/noice relation. And C2 is to filt the bit swhitching, can be a 10nf or less.

I already do this with the parallel port and is the best way to do an DAC with passive pieces. In that time i replug the audio between the cartridge SLOT of the msx.

Is it possible for MSX to decompress AVI format in real time? The winning demo of Snow Challenge has a real-time decompression engine built in it. Can the same be implemented for the AVI format? Or am I demanding too much from the little machine, MSX?

That's way too much Even my old Pentium 166 has problems unpacking that

EVA is an uncompressed video format, hence

AVI format can contain many different formats inside, but generally I think, that 5 000% - 30 000% speed up to CPU could theoretically do the trick. It is not anyway easy to make.

I assume the program is freeware, so if you can send 0.10 to downloads@msx.org, we'll add it to the download db.

Check out "Source of the EVA player for IDE" from members.chello.nl/h.otten/frontsw.htm

I don't know what are the differences, but at least you can load a background picture on 0.10 version. I loaned my "skin" from Windows media player :-9

Usually problem is caused by fragmented HD. In this case you can skip the fragment, if you define start frame later, than the fragment.

I'm not sure, but I think, that FAT16 driver has also some kind of bug, that corrupts large files, if you try to copy them. You can anyway use FAT12 formatted CF cards to transfer files between PC and MSX. At least my PC CF reader understands FAT12 formatted CF cards just fine.
