How about the rules:

- contestants can enter more than one song
- arrangement/remix can be in any style but must be recognizable at some point

?

uh yeah sure.. I was already having 3 tunes in mind

And the reckognisable thing: sure. You usually see remixes of songs with 1 bar copied, and the rest being dullness. The idea is to recreate old tunes more or less in the same way we're already doing for the past few years with gametunes.

So it's really like doing gameremakes.. except that this time we pick tunes from the scene, probably from ppl we know.. that's the psychological aspect of it.. Japan with its games was always so far away, this is now very close!

Let's first setup some idea of rules:

- only fully original songs by msx-scene-composers, no partly covered or fully covered songs by the composer you choose.

for example, on Muzax3 you can find "Aurora Borealis 2", but it's partly based on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells 2, so you can't take that one

Damnit.. I was thinking of remaking Impact's The Ant profile BGM, probably my all time favorite msx-scene tune... but it has a pinch of Nemesis in it :'(
Or are we bending the rules on these kinds of little 'feature' melody-lines embedded in an otherwise totally different song.

I've been thinking about another possible rule, but it's kind of sucky: You're not allowed to remake one of your own songs

well, it's a bit difficult to draw a line then... where to draw the line between covers and own work?

about the last rule: agreed... (who'd want to remake own tunes anyway?? where's the fun in that?)

There probably should also be a (this?) thread to consult whether or not a "scene"-tune contains whiffs of other music. Though that of course inevitably gives away which song one's working on.

And I take it we stick tunes that partly cover scene-music (as opposed to game-music) from other platforms under the same rule? In other words: where do we draw the line?

Well Profile, you can always remake that song without the nemesis part. Like I could skip the commando part, which I will likely do anyway since I probably will have no space left to do it If I want to do what I plan to do after one day of research that is.

and @ haze: problem is that I have no clue which melodies belong to scene music of other platforms, except the really obvious ones, like Red Sector on music disk 1 of Impact.

Other platforms????? you really want an IP-ban from MRC, don't you?

let's stick to what the msx-scene made on msx-computers ..

Merely pointing out what MrRudi said, that for instance some Impact tunes have melodies from other platforms. And I for one am not which msx-scene tunes contain only original material.

The only allowed game-tunes are tunes from scene-games, like those from anma, msx-engine, sunrise etc. Non-scene-games are out. The whole purpose of this challenge is to take some tune of ppl you know, or who're at least reasonably close. I think it's funny to see which tunes ppl take, and how they improve or ruin it. And if they do, how ppl react on it.. etc. etc. the whole psychological/ethical issue is the fun-factor here, not the musical aspect perse.. (well, it is.. but this challenge would be identical to 'remake gfx from jetsoft', knowing that he's here lurking around in the forum and seeing you repaint his ideas). It's the knowing that the original composer knows that you're remaking his tune and might get back to you on it because you could meet him on the next fair or meeting.. ^_^

As said earlier in this thread, it's like the first edition of Big Brother. But rather than thinking the house/cams were the fun-factor, the actual fun-factor was the mass of psychologists and scientists in the newspapers who were debating about the subject and spreading their opinions.

If you want to remake xak3 then do so.. and just release it as an individual release. Read the text above again until you get the whole idea of this challenge, if you do you'll notice that Xak3 has completely zippo to do with all this.

To give a more clear example of how things can turn out:

If your result is better than the original, ppl might accuse you of being a show-off, with all the typical arguements like 'yeahyeah now just try it on old hardware, hmmkay? no fun with your equipment x and outboard y'

If your result is too difficult, the original composer might say: 'hey, this is completely NOT what I meant, you barbarian!'

If you ruin it and the original sounds better you get things like: 'pfff.. can't you even soup-up a 12yo tune with hardware that's 20years newer compared to msx stuff?'

And even if you did the perfect remake.. who -towards the audience- gets the credits then? You or the original composer?

Do you pick an average/bad tune and make something brilliant out of it.. things are even worse: creating such a gap of quality might be seen as huge disrespect to the original composer, like saying 'see? this is how it's done!'

Did the composer a better tune, but you picked a less good one, leads to: 'why didn't you pick the better one? now you advertise the original composer's less good tune'

See? It's all full of scene-ethical issues..

There's always something that can go wrong..! Maybe a bit over the top (and it prolly won't happen such extreme like this), but because you know the ppl who did the original tunes, chances are that you get completely weird reactions and situations..

Lovely challenge ^_^

some other questions: should we select 10 msx scene mp3's and make them available for say micromusic and VORC? plenty of people who'd like to do some remixing I think. Not everyone is familiar with msx, so people would have to install emu's etc, internally record the sounds from demo's in order to remix it etc. (trust me, the airwaves episode on the msx demoscene took a loooong time)
There's currently a biiiiig project finished where people have covered kraftwerk on various machines, so I reckon people from various
chipdisciplines wouldn't mind sinking their teeth into this challenge ^_^
Could be a fun idea, since it'll be a nice introduction to the musical world of the msx, which isn't THAT wellknown outside the scene. Besides, the more people we can lure into this MSX deathtrap the better
It could be dropped at VORC, you'll definately get people going then.

Question to Wolf: What about sampling bits from tracks? Remixing might also mean sampling sounds or melody lines.
(so should it be a full cover, should j-war get his guitar waxed and where is piet veerman these days?)
