The worst what you can do is desolder the chips.
You can damage the PCB, and that is the only part what you cannot replace.

I use a 50 W solder-station.
and a 75 W desolder-station

It is very important to use a solder-station and not a solder-iron.

And I am very sure that it is impossible to extend the computer to 512 kB without any other changes, bacause the ram-chips don't fit in places of the normal 64 kB ram.
It is very easy to extend the computer to 128 kB

I use Solomon SL-20 soldering station (grounded, low voltage, regulated 50-300c), and I never had issues desoldering components

You can see on the photos from msxposse that under the chips is an extra pcb.

The prints were homemade and inverted by Digital KC.

I used it a lot of times, but now I am out of those pcb's

Did it on a 70FD2. I'll publish the tutorial and like later in www.tabajara-labs.com.br (the article will be in Portuguese, but I'd love someone who speaks english, translate it to me. Unfortunately I'm short on free time)

It is easy, but involves making a small board to fit the 4 x 44256 RAMs.

I upgraded my Wavy 35J about a year and a half ago. Wasn't any harder then WX/WSX/FX upgrade. Just need two wires from MSX engine for extra address lines and stick four DRAM chips on a small PCB. I used wire from old 40-pin IDE cable, trying to keep it as short as possible. Works really well.
