Grauw: I ordered the PAL version at play.com a week and a half ago and I got it last Friday. So it's definitely available in Europe. By the way, the game lets you choose between PAL and NTSC at boot time, so "PAL" only refers to the region lockout system.

So far my favourite multiples type is 2 (controllable fire direction), but sometimes I get so carried away shooting at different angles that I forget to move the ship and fly into a bullet or a wall.

I think it's funny that there is still a limit on the number of player bullets in the screen. In the MSX versions, this was probably necessary for performance. But now it has become part of the game play tradition of Gradius, even though there is no technical reason for it anymore. Also enemies that drop power ups are red, while the power up pods themselves are more yellow than red in Gradius V. The game is an interesting mix of old-school game play and modern graphics.

I hate those arcade shooters that have hundreds of bullets on the screen!!! A great gameplay decision by Konami in that respect!

Also, if you DON'T MOVE, you WON'T get hit by bullets! That's unless the screen is vertically scrolling.

ah. you mean the ones were you just drop 3 superbombs before being killed by 100 bullets at once
yes. kinda silly games are those.

So you don't adore the likes of the masterpiece Ikaruga, for instance?

actually, compare Ikaruga with the likes of, say, a generic ~1995-~1998 vertical shmup in MAME, and you'll notice the difference between 'gameplay' and ' throw as many bullets as possible'.

(semi-OT: if we're on the subject of shmups, I thought Border Down was a pretty cool Gradius clone)

it's not a coincidence that Ikaruga and Gradius 5 are both developed by Treasure (as Gradius 3 & 4 actually kinda sucked)

Though I prefer Gradius 5 over Ikaruga, that's probably because of nostalgic reasons.

Now all we need is Aleste 3 for the PS2

ZanacXZanac was already very nice, but yeah, why not

I don't think Gradius IV is so bad, it's just that it pales in comparison with V
I didn't really like Gradius Galaxies (GBA) though.

Indeed, as Samor said there's a huge difference between Ikaruga (which I thought was very innovative with the yin-yang principle!) and somehow popular shoot'em-ups from Psikyo or something...

No

Simply because I have a working PS2, and a non-working MSX2

And besides that, remakes of MSX games on a popular console are more appealling to me than new versions of those games on MSX itself (unless they make an MSX3 with mindblowing specs) ^_^

here's some mindblowing specs for ya:
Z80 3.5Mhz
V9938
SCC/ FM-Pac
128Kb Ram
128 Kb Vram

wooooooooww..

compare that with the Mega/ GigaBytes that a gameconsole uses.. and compare THAT with the gameplay of the gameconsoles.. they make real good graph-x, rotate a few even.. but the gameplay is sometimes horrid thanx to the many interuptions by voiceovers/ videos.. (hehe.. Silpheed.. anyone )

Unlike some others i'm not really that impressed anymore these days with rotating pixels (tm)

And though it had it's charm I also didn't like the 8pixels scroll (blocky scroll!) ... Though I must say Aleste 2 had an amazingly smooth scroll

And comparing gameplay with PS2-shooters is ofcourse bullsh*t (if you're unbiassed that is)

Yes, but you can actually buy Ikaruga et al and play them. If you want to play those 'generic ~1995-~1998' shumps you'll better start clearing your room/hiring a forklift/rob a bank .

btw. /me is still pretty pissed off from losing all his JAP saves for his Dreamcast . Well, in time I will have everything unlocked again .
