Indeed welcome .......And I share your concern. I want a standard and being able to flash the core doesn't really help, I think......But snout thinks otherwise, for example. And many with him Fortunately! |

AFAIK it's possible to connect both a TV and a VGA screen, as the prototype has separate SVHS/VGA connectors. Thanks for the compliments about msx.org btw ^_^

ok.. here's my thought..

- What makes you think the MSX Revival will become a (huge) success?
|
Depends on what goal lies a ahead.. Bringing it to the big public.. I don't think so (think apple).. But bringing a big stream trough the MSX community.. think it's quite successfull cauz everyone in the MSX community is talking about it...

- What makes you think "this is it", when it comes to the MSX Revival?
|
I think there's more on the horizon... MSX is a simple standard and can go ahead with todays technoligy.. so to say 'this is it'.. Yah.. for the moment.. But more is possible.

I don't think the MSX community will suffer from the MSX revival.. In stead, I think the opposite will happen

I don`t think it will be successful if it`s only presented ONLY as a computer. I think it would be smart to integrate it in DVD-players, Satelite decoders, PDA`s, Internet boxes and even TV`s... Wouldn`t it be cool to pack a DVD with MSX games and play on your DVD player? A lot of these devices has games and programs integrated, but to have a standard for this (namely the MSX "multimedia" standard) would be a nice trick to get MSX back.

Well, that's a point yeah .. however, don't you think the major domestic electronica manufacturors would rather licence something like a PS2 or xbox orso? Or if it must be something retro, than a system that survived a little longer than the msx?
However, MSX in domestic stuff is cool ofcourse I just try to look through the eyes of the Philipses, Sonys, JVCs, Panasonics of this world ... (and yes, all made MSX'es once ) |

I agree ofcourse, but I still think it`s doable. If you look at the games already in such devices, they are almost always old games remade, and in resolutions and specs that the MSX 2 would cope with. And if they were to implement a gfx9000 orso it could cope with even better stuff And there IS a satelite decoder with an MSX emulator built in already! And I bet ASCII still has allot of connections with the old MSX firms, and maybe there`s even a couple of MSX enthusiasts left in some of them. Even text-tv could use a new interface which the MSX could cope with. Well, I`m rambling... |

It's me again, the newbie
I translated all the one chip msx articles i could find. Seems they target a price around 100$us (10000 yen). They talk of already having msx 2 + fm sound working on the one chip msx. They also talk of removing some connectors, which i hope doesn't happen as the specs are nearly perfect right now. Can't wait to see which kind of case they'll come up with. |

Although onboard ethernet would be coul it's not an absolute necessity to me. One can always use an ObsoNet cartridge, right?

I just found out on the Altera website that you can update the core of the FPGA using an USB cable, i think usb will stay. They seem to mention that the cartridge slots will support add-ons so my guess it's that the obsonet cart should work. I hope they don't reduce the cart slots to just one. Oh well, time will tell.
Seems they want to release it in spring 2005, some articles mentionned march.
In case anyone have doubts the MSX can relive, you should read up on the neogeo game system, which remained alive without any sort of upgrade for like 13 years. They just stopped making new games for it. A new king of fighters could sell in the dozens of thousands units for the home system (i think it could be twice that but i have no hard numbers so i'm relying on my memory).
