Do ppl here have frequent issues with CF cards?

Seems that my 2nd CF within a year is about to crash .. I can't boot from it, and in windows, some dirs/files can't be read.

(big joy tho..: my last backup contains all my RoA music .. yay ^_^ )

However, it's very crappy ofcourse .. not to mention that of my 128mb CF I only used 15mb orso (the art of small samples ), so getting a new CF card would have like 112mb (or even more!) wasted ..

Seems a network interface that can use a dir on a PC is a bit more safe ..

I use two 32mb cards from canon (32mb, because that eases up interexchangability with my pc). Never had any trouble with them, but then again, I am not a heavy user. I mainly use them to test software. Some sort of network mapping to my pc (pref. linux) would fit my needs better also.

I have been frequently using Kingston and Sandisk cards for ages now (well, ever since the CF interface ) and never had any troubles with either of them.

Actually I blew a Sandisk card from a friend of mine, using my CF-adapter. That's why I stick to HDDs, they make noise, so you're certain of their functionality if the sound is right

The CF-adapter hasn't been used ever since. Maybe I should Sunrise have a look at it

My current "in state of being crashed" CF card is a SanDisk 128mb o_O

Previous one was a Transcend 64mb..

Is there a black list somewhere with crap-brands, and a happyness-list with good-brands?

Two Sandisks, one 128MB, one 16MB, no problems at all so far.

Transcend I shouldnot use and be very careful with no name's.
They are sometimes good, but on the other hand they have the nasty habit to work only in a particular slot.
Sandisk , well I heard also from Koen that his sandisk crashed also.
I use Dane-elec.

I've used SanDisk 128MB as HD and 32MB Cannon to exchange data between PC & MSX. I've had no problems since I learned to stop the memorycard reader before removing the card from PC.

nyyrikki: that's what I did with my first CF as well .. (pulling it out without official 'eject') ... didn't do so with my second tho..

Spicy detail: both CF card seem to have crashed exactly 1 day after an MRC challenge-deadline (previous one right after the Underwater challenge)

The MSX Resource Center rejects all responsibility for damages or injuries resulting from entering its challenges ^_^

1x 128MB TwinMOS. The first CF card I bought died within a day; I went back to the store, they replaced it (same brand), no problems since.
1x 256MB Apacer. No problems at all.

Big bummer for me was the fact that inserting the 256MB CF card into a Wncrap XP computer blew away all data on it :-( For some reason, Windows thought it was fun to automagically convert the FAT16 partition on it into a FAT32 one, which rendered it completely useless to my MSX.

The TwinMOS will only work in the first CF slot, not in the second :?

Be happy they didn't crash one day *before* the deadline.

Btw, is "official eject" an eject button on the card reader or the windows feature to "stop" the device?

From my little experience with card under windows, it's file cahce behaviour is extremely tricky when dealing with cards on usb readers. Maybe stopping the device before ejecting the card helps to avoid data corruption.
Unless the card physically failed, in which case there's nothing like a good backup

official eject is: rightmousebutton on the CF card and "eject"

That has actually never worken for me (w2k). I deleted the files. Did eject. Pulled the card from the reader and put it in my camera. Voila! All the files were still there. Aparently it's very eratic about when it actually writes stuff back to the card. But eject doesn't appear to affect it.
