Hello, I came to this forum once before when I had a question on a machine, whether it’ll be good enough to run Vampire Killers or not. Everyone was very helpful, so here I am again requesting your help.

The machine I was questioning was the Sony HB-F1 2, the machine worked fine with Vampire Killers, but after examining the machine for awhile I noticed something that didn’t look factory. Once opening the machine I’m pretty sure it isn’t. It seems that the machine has been modded. Beside the power switch it has a toggle switch with a label above it that says, Clock 4MHz then switch to 6MHz. Once flipping this switch to 6MHz on my US NTSC television it goes to black and white. In 4MHz it runs fine.

Another mod, it seems is two audio channels on the side, with another toggle switch. Once again a label above it says. MON/STE.

So the Problem is, I recently purchased a copy of Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake off ebay and the sound is messed up. Most notable is on the opening sequence all you can hear is, what I’d assume is like the drum beat. It seems that all the music is this way. I’m pretty sure that the audio mod has messed up the sound in the game.

I’m thinking I can bypass this problem by using the RF hook up. So how would I get the RF connection working on my TV? I figured I could use one of those old Atari 2600 converter switches, but it doesn’t work.

Also do you think this will solve the problem? Should I just buy a different MSX2?

About the solid snake ish: without SCC (the cart) it's only mainly drums. There have been some illegal run-ins on eBay, so if you've got a disk version of MG2, I suggest you sue the seller's ass. In the other case, it might be some connectors are broken, try to find out and resolder them. It's not necessarily because of the mods you know .

If you want to be sure it's not the cart, try inserting for example a FM-PAC and play some tunes on it, or insert a Nemesis2/Gradius2 or similar. If you keep hearing only PSG, something might be broken inside your MSX, but it wouldn't be very bad.

And hey! Cool machine!

It’s the cart edition not disk, I’m pretty confident it’s a original, not a bootleg. I tried checking all the solder points but couldn’t lift up under the circuit board in fear of breaking the board it’s self. Something wouldn’t give, I couldn’t figure out what it was for life of me. So I just put it back together.

I figured out a way around the sound problem though. I just plug the audio into the original audio outlet, make sure the switch on the other plugs is on stereo then blast my television audio. The sound is correct then. I’m almost positive it has something to do with the mod.
