Jagasian:
One can't just spread/sell a NES .. you need the rights to do so ..

Of course, but that 'little problem' doesn't have to influence the success of the product |

Well, no one is selling a NES. MSXA is selling a generic FPGA hardware that would be able to run NES games with Kevin's VHDL code. :-) As long as he didn't use any proprietary information or software (like BIOS) to achieve his goal of running NES software, I don't see a problem. Isn't the same thing about commercial emulators we saw some years ago with Sony and Bleem ?

It could be nice if the FPGA will can be upgradeable: instead of soldering it into the board, do a very complete bus connector for it with all needed even for a future and A LOT BIGGER FPGA. By example: a bigger FPGA for future MSX2+ and MSX Turbo R (with music module, moonsound...), SNES and GENESIS, even big 16bit stuff (neogeo, x68000, Amiga 500...). Very good for today, even better for tomorrow! Imagine a good upgradeable FPGA platform at good money price! A lot more people will buy it
If you want good selling, think at this, if the platform is really VERY GOOD, people will do FPGA homebrew and the product will sell a lot more thanks to the community! |

I'd be glad to pay 50 bucks for such upgrade

1. The NES patent is expired, NES clones actually are 100% legal.
2. About still patented stuff: you sell a product, people do free stuff for it. Emulation without profit is legal in USA, all kinds of emulations are legal on Europe. Software patents aren't available on europe but on USA they are (hello DMCA)... You download the core from the (insert the name of the product here) community with a nice forum and FPGA programmers doing stuff/learning...

In what country? Cloning the NES is legal in the USA as long as it is based on either reverse engineered information or on expired patents. Of course, it couldn't use "NES", "Famicom", or "Nintendo" in it's name, but it would be perfectly legal for the One-Chip-MSX to have NES/Famicom compatibility. |

ok, in that case I'll say nothing about the legality anymore |

To be safe, ASCII would only advertise compatibility with the Famicom and NES, but even that is not required. All that is needed is for them to at least talk to Kevin to convince him to port his work, which might only additionally require a free development kit sent to Kevin. Otherwise, Kevin might decide to stick with the hardware platform that he already has a prototype built for, and then simply manufacture a smaller number of his system and sell only to the NES crowd. This isn't as good of a scenario for many reasons. Obviously it would be better for the two camps to agree on a common platform, and ASCII seems to have the resources to mass produce their platform... but Kevin already has a complete NES/Famicom implementation in terms of the Cyclone.
If anybody has a better idea, let me know, but currently, I see no reason to let the idea of a FPGA based retro console splinter into two separate platforms.

Jagasian: Being involved in Bazix myself, I certainly would not say 'no' to the developer of the NES-FPGA-kit shifting his attention to the One Chip MSX. However, ASCII, MSX Association and Bazix can only officially support this project if it's absolutely sure there are no legal problems involved whatsoever, worldwide. I don't think ASCII want to spoil their good relationship with Nintendo . If you could contact Bazix privately by e-mail, we could look at all the options. Who knows what might come out of it... |

I am not affiliated with Kevin's FPGA NES project, so you guys will have to contact him. I do not even know Kevin on a personal basis, and I am not sure if Kevin has considered ASCII's platform or not. I just want to see a standard FPGA-based gaming system that is capable of accurate circuit-level emulation of 8-bit gaming systems. If the two projects don't work together, then neither of them will see mass production. Kevin's FPGA NES is based entirely on legally reverse engineered information, but then again I am not a lawyer, so you would have to ask one for real legal advice, but Kevin made a point of going about the design and development of his FPGA NES in a 100% legal manner.
Let me repeat my main point. With just MSX support, ASCII's system will have trouble getting 5000 pre-orders. Currently they have no more than 2500 pre-orders. However, if ASCII also markets their system as having NES/Famicom compatibility, you can be sure that another 2500 pre-orders will be easy to obtain. The NES/Famicom is at least as popular as the MSX.
Again, since I don't know Kevin, please contact him yourself. Convince him to port his work to ASCII's system. Also, when talking to him, realize that you are talking to an engineer, so don't be surprised if he isn't very good at responding to his emails. Here is his contact info:
http://www.tripoint.org/kevtris/Contact/
If you have trouble contacting him with that email address, then you can try posting here:
http://nesdev.parodius.com/bbs/
...as while Kevin doesn't post on that forum, a few prominent NES emulator developers (Quietust and Memblers) know him on a personal basis and will definitely be able to get in contact with him. |

@Samor :
No, Zemina Zemmix can not play NES games by default.
However, Zemina did create an expansion cartridge that allowed NES games to be played on your MSX (this actually degraded your MSX computer to power supply unit ).
