ah, good question indeed (sorry thought maybe ya didn't know the reverse part)
Any one played msg3 yet? A friend of mine (non MSX user) finished the game a couple 'a weeks ago on PS2 and liked it very much. But for us, MSX geeks, it's another story I reck'n. Anyone?

MGS3? you mean the normal PS2 version?
I played that last year. I loved the story this time (I wasn't too impressed with the previous two), but didn't found too much to come back for after I finished it. Subsistence ought to be more interesting as far as that's concerned with online mode and the original two games and all.

ha, i borrowd a PS2 from a friend a while ago and played Metal Gear : Snake Eater! In the beginning i wondered why its in the 60's, i thought that Solid Snake could never be that old... anyway...
in the very end i found out that i wasnt playing with the Solid Snake we all know, no... i was playing with Solid (and Liquid) Snake's father --> BIG BOSS!!!
how nice to see big boss as a good guy first, and then kill him in MG2SolidSnake!
very nice |

POISE: what GFX card do you have? If it's an ATi, like I have, you should download the free patch for ATi cards, that's available somewhere on the net. The game only supports GeForce (preferrably FX series or higher) by default. I have to say, it runs quite smooth with effects on medium and resolution of 800*480 on my P4 2.4 + Radeon 9550 256MB...
Heck, they'd better done a complete re-code for the game, instead of emulating a PS2 o_O

I also had problems with MGS2PC on a GeForce 6600 GT. The solution is to put some graphic quality settings on the second-to-best level rather than the highest, because of certain bugs in the highest settings.
Incidentally, the original MGSPC only runs in software mode on my computer because nVidia stopped supporting certain DX7-commands. In general, unfortunately, the PC ports of these games are not exactly "Konami-kwaliteit".

POISE: 7800GT o_O! You've got too much cash or what? ... Mm, it should run fine - but maybe GeForce stripped some DX7/DX8 calls which are necessary in that game... so performance will drop idd... Sounds odd to me though, but hey. And yes, MGS2:Substance for PC *IS* actually running on a Konami homebrew PS2 emulator - guess that's why the install is like 7GB: all sorts of ISO files will be copied to your PC. MGS1 for PC seems to be somewhat better though: a P2 @ 266MHz and 3D accelerator card is enough to play it. Great game also, but once you've beat it, it's no fun anymore, unlike the MSX versions. MGS1 however *has* the VR mission pack, which is great! I finished 96.6%... only have to do the 10-level VR-Mission and then I'm finally done! |

Just played the Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake conversions on the second Snake Eater Subsistence disc... I'm a little disappointed because it is great to see the MSX logo on the PS2, the scrolling of it is VERY bad (imagine frameskip 4). It looks like Konami didn't reprogram the games, but chose to use a emulator. And the intro demo of MG2SS is also choppy as hell.
Also the graphics quality is worse than I expected. I use a real RGB cable for my PS2 (and for my MSX as well of course) but the colours look washed out and not as crisp as on the real machine.
But: the good part is that the speed of the games is much better than the original carts. Especially MG2SS plays very nice and fast. Also it is now possible to change the difficulty to easy if you prefer that.
For the cast, they use the same pictures as the mobile phone versions and they did redraw the text boxes, but again, the animation of the opening and closing of the boxes is almost gone (that effect was pretty impressive when MG2SS was released in 1990)
The music is as good as it always was, but I think the SCC plays to loud compared to the PSG, but then again, the Japanese obviously like it that way, because it is the same on the soundtrack CD's Konami released years ago...
I don't know if Konami changed the story, because I didn't play the games till the end. Maybe I try that when the American or European version is released.

Since you totally ignored my earlier post I will just repeat it. I had the exact same problem with my 6600GT, and if you google around you'll find you're not the only one who experiences this. The ATI patch won't help you. The only solution is to go to the OPTION menu, choose the "Drawing tab" and set "Model Quality" to the second lowest setting. When you start the game, you'll suddenly have the rest of your graphics back.
I know it's painful to not set every graphic setting to the highest with your shiny new nVidia, but at least I know the reason now... I also wasn't aware that MGS2 was more or less a PS2-emulator.
So I guess I can blame Konami for not being able to play MGS2 using the maximum capabilities of my hardware, while I can blame nVidia for not being able to play MGSPC (made by Microsoft, by the way) properly unless I put my old crappy graphics card in... |
