its still not 100% clear how to implement this in machine code.....
And another thing:
Does this mean that besides SETTING notes to play,
I should have a little routine running that constantly changes the volume every x interrupts?
Example,
I increase the volume with 3, then 4 interrupts later I decrease volume with 3, then 4 interrupts later I increase the volume with 3, then 4 interrupts later I decrease volume with 3, etc. etc.
Is this what you mean?

| Yes! That's how, for example, I did the laser sfx for UU. One of the most right columns should be set to VWave orso.. some keycombi orso.. shift-w?
|
Id like to have a look at this, is that possible? |

Not every x interrupts, every interrupt. And not necessarily just the volume, but the frequency as well.

ah, ok,
and why are there 3 volume channels (1 per PSG channel) AND a hardware volume channel/
And what does the hardware volume channel do anyway?? I never used it

Eh? 'hardware volume channel' ???
I suggest you just read the chapters on the PSG in any MSX-BASIC book.
Really.
That 'hardware volume channel' is not a channel perse, it defines the hardware volume envelope. Each of the PSG channels can eitther set it's own volume (0-15) or use the volume envelope defined by psg registers 11-13 ('volume' 16). |

With the 'hardware volume channel' you can transform the square wave form into some other
wave form... setting the right frequantie (wave lenght) and envelope.
But you could just read wolf's post again. Or try a tracker like vortex tracker, it comes with a
few demo tunes wich demonstrate this feature.

There are some disadvantages to the hardware envelopes though. You can only select one envelope for use in all three channels. And the volume for the channels using an envelope can't be changed.

That limmitation is probably th main reason that most psg songs are heavy hard drum beat songs. After all making a lot of noise is what the psg is good at.
A nice example is Das Verbaten La Fuego Ver Chuta! (Chuta.pt3). |

OK guys, which machines do have an YM2149 and not an AY-3-8910?
I saw that the S-3527 MSX-ENGINE has a built in YM2149, so machines with that engine have the YM, at least. Those are all Philips MSX2 models, right?
Also the Yamaha CX-5MII has such an MSX-ENGINE and thus an YM PSG. But which other ones? Help me out here please |
