I see no differences between these systems. Both have the same type of floppy drive, the same keyboards, OPL sound, a double density floppy drive, the sliders on top...they generally seem identical.
I had a choice of getting an XDJ or a XV...I have to admit that the deciding factor was the shiny gold sticker on the XDJ. As far as I could tell there was no difference.
Definitely found that baffling at the time, and I still do.
Anybody have the scoop on that?

The HB-F1XV was the last MSX produced by Sony. I would choose the XV.

It seemed to me that XV would be 15 in roman numerals (same as the X68000 XVI, for 16), but XDJ makes no sense (and XD wouldn't either - 490? You can't do that in Roman numerals, it'd have to be CDXC).
Anyway, the XV seems to be pretty much the same computer. Rebranded and with a slightly different case, maybe, but every button is in the same place (unless something in the back has changed), and all the indicator lights are the same. Might have been built with lower-cost parts or have gotten a reliability fix, maybe.

EdOscuro: afaIk the MSX-JE ROM is not included in the HB-F1XV, which is where the 'J' stands for in HB-F1XDJ.

Yes, both reportedly have MSX-JE, and the Kanji ROMs.

I own both models, and I just want to add that internally they are also identical.
It is highly probable that case color is the only difference.

Weird!; so what's the reason behind the production of such machine (XV)?, sometimes SONY amazes me...

I doubt that the PCB (and its components) are identical. Buy the XV.

I would agree - if you have to make a choice between identical models, just pick the newest |

Marketing... "hey it's new"
Anyway, I maybe would have gone with the XV...but this sale was accomplished a looooong time ago.
Lawrence might still have the XV for sale, you can check it out at nfggames.com/sales :
My XDJ
The XV
This is the system I was actually saving up for before I got the XDJ; it got sold for waaay less than the sticker price on eBay and I didn't even know it was for sale. Ugh, RGB and 256K RAM! I coulda played Space Manbow off disk on this thing. |

Whoa, this is actually the first time I've seen a black Sony HBF900. And the videotizer is damn sexy as well! |

Geez! Never seen the ones on the FUNet/MSXArchive? E.g. this one. Also linked to from the MSX hardware list of course.
