I was wondering how easy it is to build a floppy drive that fits a Yamaha floppy addapter cartridge, like the one for sale on ebay:

I used to connect my Yamaha floppy adapter to my Yamaha disk drive but that stopped working a while ago.
So I figured the problem was the disk drive because it seems to be the one that breaks most easily.

The problem is that when I type files, I can hear the motor of the disk drive spinning but after a second or two
I get 'disk offline' as response.

But today I connected the floppy adapter to my PC drive and the result was the same, the motor started
and I get the same response, 'disk offline'.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix the problem? It seems like its either me or the floppy interface that
is broken.

It is the same interface as the sony HBD-50
It is not possible to connect a drive on the interface, only the original drive.
The the case of the drive there is also a part of the electronics you need for the drive.

That drive is also single sided

Do you use the same interface as on the ebay-picture?

There is also a double sided version. That interface you can use with all types of diskdrives.
But the drive you want to use have to be jumpers for A-B settings, also you need een ready signal.
All new drives have a disk-change signal.

It is not too difficult to connect a PC drive to this kind of floppy adapter.
It has been done many times to all kind of MSX adapters, including the simple Philips VY and Somy HDB50.
Just have a look at these documents, collected from many contributors, e.g. solving the READY problem.

Thanks for the replies. My setup is:

Yamaha FD-05 Disk drive
Yamaha FD-051 Disk drive adapter

I double checked and the manual says its a two sided drive.

I did some further tests and when I do call format, it is formatting the disk but when its about to finish it says "disk error".
Can it be the ready line that is not working properly?

The disk drive has one 4-switch jumper that I don't know what its doing. Its set to 0 now. I didn't see any other
jumpers.

Any ideas?

I suppose I could try with my PC floppy drive again and try to get the ready line to work as expected.

Some good news. I disassembled the disk drive and found a loose cable inside the metallic cover that surrounds the actual drive.
I put the cable back where I thought it belonged and now the drive works again I suppose it may be related to the ready.

Now I have another problem instead (not sure if its new or old), when I want to move my files from PC to a disk, I use disk manager,
but either disk manager isn't capable of writing single sided disks or there is something else wrong.
Unfortunately it seems like the disk drive in my WSX isn't working 100% either, when I format a single sided disk in the WSX I get
'disk error', so I have to format the disks on my Yamaha. Then I created a disk in disk manager that is readable on the WSX and
I wanted to copy the files onto the Yamaha formatted disk. This doesn't work either (or at least not very good), I often get write
error. The file size seems ok but sometimes the data is corrupted.

So now I would be very happy if someone could explain why the disks I create in Disk Manager doesn't work on my Yamaha.
I suppose it may have something to do with that they are single sided. Is there a way around this so I don't need to use my WSX?

Sorry for these rather basic questions but I haven't used diskettes in a long time (I used my ESE cart and gamereader to load it
until the ESE ram stopped working).

For some reason I actually got it to work now Really not sure what I did wrong with disk manager, but now it works.
