I'm new to this forum and so oppologise if this is a trivial question...

Years ago I wrote a program (BASIC) for my Toshiba MSX which is stored on tape. Is it possible, and if so how, to somehow convert that program so that it can be played on an emulator or something?

Thanks in advance.

You can sample it through your soundcard and store it in a wav file. Emulators can actually read that just like a normal msx. Provided that the quality of the tape is still good enough of course.

Interesting! Ok then... let's say I start from a clean sheet and all I have are the MSX bits and a PC - what emulator bits and bobs would you recommend I use to ensure an easy ride through this conversion? Any help would be much appreciated.

It's no conversion. You just record the tape and play the wav file in the emulator (use one which supports loading WAV files, or alternatively, do a conversion after all, and convert it to a .CAS file with tools like wav2cas).

Quick instructions:
- Connect cassette player to your PC line input. Any casette player will do, does not have to be MSX specific.
- Use your favourite audio recorder to record your cassette to WAV-file. One good one is Audacity ( http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ) that is available for Linux and Windows. (Just like if you move your music from cassette to pc)
- Take for exaple OpenMSX emulator (also available for Linux & Windows)
- Use the WAV file as cassette
- Load the program just like in your MSX (Use CLOAD or LOAD"CAS:" command)
- Save your program to disk, harddisk or other format you like. (Keeping the program as WAV file takes quite a lot of space and does not work in all MSX emulators)

Other possibility is just use some wav2cas program to convet the data to .CAS file. This is common tape format that works with all MSX emulators and does not take too much disk space.

If you want to post the source to this forum threat or something like that you can use SAVE"XYZ.TXT",A command to store the source in standard text file.
