Ofcourse there is MSX-Engine's Cheatmaster...

But as for emulators... MESS might support savestates, and I presume it also has MAME's powerful cheatengine!

You can also save emulation state with BRMSX, but only in MSX 1 mode. As BRMSX has a very extended debugger, you can of course cheat (in MSX 1 and MSX 2 modes)

Another way to cheat with games is the use of an hexadecimal editor (like WinHex) to read all the "secrets" of a dsk or rom image and create a modified image

Let's not forget that Save States can serve a very practical function as well. Not only for games that use tape (Metal Gear, etc.), but for debugging purposes or simply for convenience.

Yup, savestates are quite handy for developers & tranlsators all over the world. However, are there any save state editors available? With techniques similar to the MSX Engine game-master you'd be able to cheat quite a lot.

brMSX. It's an old emulator as in not updated for quite some time. It supports save states and has a debugger. I for one am not that fond of it as I'm used to coding stuff on the real thing using Compass, but other people may find it suitable for their needs.

And the MSX Engine tool is called Cheat Master.
