How Do I Load A Cartridge From The Main Blue Menu Screen?

I just bought a MSX2 System!
And I got the game called Akumajuo Dracula which is the Japanese version of
Vampire Killer.
When I start the system I end up at the blue main menu screen with it wanting me to enter a Syntax command!

I am not very good at Syntax.
Actually I pretty much suck at it.
So Help me how can I get this game working so I can play it?

I want to know how to load the game after I turn on the system.
Remember this is a cartridge. Not a floppy disk.

Thanks!

Assuming this is a cartridge you have to insert it to the cartridge slot of the msx.It depends where this is located.Try to insert it there, and usually after you switch on the system the game will start. If not then it could mean that cartridge is not insterted correctly.Try to insert it correctly.

Did that help?

Well,
I have 2 slots for the cartridge,
And I have put the game into both slots and it won't fit any other way except with the lable fowarad. and it fits nice and snug, but, your saying that is should reconize it automatically if it is inserted.
Do you know how to acess the drive if it is inserted after the system is on?
I mean the cartridge is inserted correctley. I mean how many ways can you put it in. It won't let me put it in backwords with out forcing it in or braking it.

Let me know.

Thanks.

drive can be accessed bytyping "Files" (without quotes),then it will show you the files that are on disk. However it won't help you here because there is no disk drive to access but a cartridge.Try to clean maybe with cotton the cartridge ends, there may be something dirty there.Do you have any other cartridges to test?

Remember always insert the cartridge with the machine switched off, never put it in with the machine switched on because you could damage the cartridge or the msx (some experts may say that once in a while you can do it,but i have warned you what may happen if something goes wrong).

If you have a disk insert it and type files as i told you
most usually the disk will have files
look for files with ldr or bas extension
then type
run"name.ldr"
or
Run"name.bas" (name is the name of the file)
usually it will run
if there are com files or bat
then it is needs msx dos.(has your seller gave you the disk?By the way it is easy to find those disks if you want).

By the way what is the name of the msx 2 that you bought? What trademark?

Or damaged.
The name of the system trademark is SONY!

Thanks.

I think I will sell this one that I have and try to find the Euro version Vampire Killer!
By the way is there anyway to run a ROM. file of the floppy drive that I have called the FDD?

Thanks!

yes of course however you need double amount of ram for that to happen. A good utility is located here
http://www.alsoftware.com.br/adrianpage/index.php?page=msxexec (it is execrom )

or this one http://www.msxarchive.nl/pub/msx/utils/trunks/loadr10.lzh

As always check the ultimate msx FAQ located here http://www.faq.msxnet.org/suffix.html

Probably you will need dos.And be advised that if a game is 128 kbyte or greater you will need double the amount of ram or you should try to find versions available for your machine (i do not know how much ram it has so tell me).

So to sum it up roms of 128kbyte need 256kbytes or more,512 like the metalgear 2 would need 1mbyte ram,256kbyte would need 512 and so on.

If you have any other questions do not be afraid to ask!

Best regards

There exist a great number of ROM->disk conversions that require just 128K RAM/128K VRAM to run, and Vampire Killer is one of them.

yes although some conversions are not good enough eg Vampire killer for 128kbyte memory mapper has no memory. How much ram have you got?If you have 256 then use the rom file to play with execrom. If not then get the 128kbyte version.

Ok, This seems hard,
Is it possible to simply put the Vampire Killer rom on to a 3.5 Floppy disk and load it on to the MSX system?

Thanks!

As i told you earlier the dump of the rom version would require the exec rom or load rom utilities. You need the disk version. Here is what you do.Go grab an empty 720kbytes disc.I assume that your drive formats at 720 if not then a 360 will do.

Go to basic and insert that floppy.Take caution that this floppy is not a hd one.If it has a second hole on the left you need to cover it with something ,some duct tape maybe.now type

Call format and follow the instructions
after the disk is formated then go to the pc and transfer the files files of the disk version to your newly formated disk.

Simply enter it to your msx and enjoy.if you need further help email me at msx8235-spam@yahoo.gr

Hi,

Maybe we missed the obvious : oxydization of the slot connector !!
I recently bought an MSX2+ computer and the first time I tried to put a cartridge in, nothing worked.
Turned out the slot connector was oxydized, and all you need to do is to insert and remove a cartridge several times in a row, in order to clean the connector.

Zapp,
Hi and welcome to the world of MSX. Have you read the ultimate MSX faq yet? (I'm sure SOMEONE can point you that url, I don't cuz I'm lazy)

The blue screen you end up when booting the machine is the standard BASIC for MSX. You see, MSX don't have a GUI like windows or anything like that standard on board (tho there's ofcourse some GUI stuff written in the years, but still ya gotta get that working. And without any MSX knowledge its gonna be a drag).
Remember; yer going OLD SKOOL here (and I like it)

'bout the game (vampkil).
Normally, as stated before, the game should start automatically when the cart is in any slot.
if not; the game might be crooked or the cartridgeport for that matter.
Or the game/port pins are just "dirty". Start cleaning your cartridge connector (at the bottom, the gold and (should be) shiny stuff). Take a dry cloth for that.
Try it...
still no luck? Clean the cartridgeport, thaz gonna be a lot harder. Again take that cloth and maybe a little screwdriver. Wrap the cloth around the driver end and clean the port connector on the inside (carefully)

Still no luck, send the cartridge to me, just to get rid of it

hang in there, you've got yourself a might computer system with a mighte game!
(trully)

I am not sure how to format the floppy disk drive.
Wat is the command to do so?
And where is the spot on the floppy that is sopposed to have tape put on it?
Is it on the center wheel it self of to keep the read metal peace open at all times?
Maybe I should take a picture of this stuff?

Thanks!
