Ok, i have to draw it, now it is partly in my head and on pieces of paper everywhere. I am going to buy some other soundblasters, just to test different types.
For AWE32 and AWE64 devices the the EMU8000 is in between the OPL and the audio output. This has to be initialized and therefore we need 16bits. I think this can be solved with a total of 6 IC's. I don't think the memory of the AWE can be used because those 6 chips are only for I/O, for memory also muxes for addresslines are needed...
I will draw both schematics, the first one is working but i didn't test the 16 bit version, i will in a few days.

Search eBay or marktplaats.nl for Soundblaster Pro, SoundBlaster 16 or compatible ISA cards. I couldn't find one at the moment, but I wouldn't pay more than 5 euro... |

There is an YMF262 on 'Vibra 16' cards. I don't know if it is the brand or a type of the card.
