Did you hear about Dance Dance Revolution ? I am sure you know what's I am talking about, because it's made by company we all know and love - Konami. And probably you also know about PC versions of this great game like StepMania, Dance With Intensity, etc.

I've got a dance mat and started gathering so-called simfiles (set of songs with step files to be played in programs like StepMania) with melodies from various known computer games. Some of these games were released on MSX as well, so I can call them "MSX simfiles".

Here is the list of what I've collected so far:

  • Bubble Bobble (2 versions)
  • Eat 'Em Up! (a.k.a Pacman)
  • Pacman - Ram Trilogy Mix
  • Goonies 'R' Good Enough (rearrangement by Mr.T, 2 versions)
  • Gradius 3 - Salamander Beat Crush Mix
  • Gradius 3 - Burning Heat (rearrangement by Mr.T with Motoaki F)
  • Gradius -FULL SPEED- (rearrangement by Mr.T, 2 versions)
  • Tetris[Korobeiniki] (Trance Version)
  • Tetris[Korobeiniki] - Ska Mix
  • Tetris[Korobeiniki] (2 more versions)
  • TwinBee ~Generation X~ (by FinalOffset, 2 versions)
  • Vampire Killer (Neo-Thunder Mix by DM Ashura)

Other simfiles I've found include Legend Of Zelda, Mario, Metal Gear Solid 2, various songs from a lot of Castlevania titles, but I don't think I can call them or their songs MSX-related.

I have two questions to you, dear MSX-ers:

- if you like playing DDR and have a good collection of step files, can you share with me those ones from popular computer games, especially if the coresponding song appeared on MSX ? Of course, I am talking about legally distributed step files and/or accompanying music.

- people from MSX scene released a lot of *FANTASTIC* rearrangements, which mostly sound even better than works of Mr.T I've mentioned above. If you want more listeners to hear MSX rearrangements, then creating a good step files and releasing them via various DDR contests, sites, etc., can be the very perspective way to become popular, and popularize MSX as well ! The number of DDR hobbyists is growing today just like during karaoke hype some years ago. Would you like to step in ?

I also remember we played 'Nemesis 2' for a while with the dance mat, in a Barcelona MSX meeting... the freakometer was about to explode!!

I didn't find any DDR version of Ganbare Goemon Medley, only sites that mention Pop'n music 12/13.
The song itself is not that important - step files are.

Yes, it's nice.

BTW, I've got "Dance with Mario" (DDR: Mario Mix) set, and "Rendezvous on ice" from it is exactly the BGM used in Antarctic Adventure, so it can be called "MSX-related" as well.

I've bought a dance pad as a gym replacement that I can use to have fun while playing on the computer at the same time , so any other controller that doesn't envolve muscular exercising is out of interest at the time

I also try to use a dance pad to play so-called active games (branded by Kraft). Football and karate are interesting ideas for a pad game, but I prefer a whack-a-mole-type of game they have.

I also tried to use dance pad configured as MSX joystick in BlueMSX, but it almost impossible to play this way games that require a lot of keypresses - shooters, etc.

I am going to try Arkanoid and SnakeIt, any other ideas for a MSX game to be played with dance pad ?

Heh, I imagine King's Valley Dance Pad Contest - it should be nice to compete with somebody else in leg-playing As Imanok said, freakometer will explode

At our local stores we have the following types of dance mats:

  • with PlayStation-type connector
  • with parallel port connector
  • with USB connector
  • with 2 connectors - USB and PS
  • pads that don't need console or PC to be played - connect them to TV and power adapter and play

As soon as we have an USB master interface, we can do DDR very cool together with the MP3MSX card! I am really looking forward to it!

Too bad I cannot map all 10 dance pad buttons in blueMSX, the only partially appropriate device was a 2-button joystick that has 4 arrows.

But it seems I anyway have to use external tools that map real joystick to keyboard:

- it seems that using emulated joystick doesn't work well with Arkanoid - IIRC it requires special joystick ?
- using dancepad diagonal arrows to simulate simultaneous pressing of 2 regular arrows should simplify gameplay a lot (e.g. if you have to press space+diagonal arrow with just two legs)

I tried today dance mat with Tetris, Road Fighter, Pacman, Antarctic Adventure, KungFu, King's Valley (passing 1st level was a hard job !), Snakeit, Penguin Wars and Arkanoid, and each of them had it's own problems and techniques to master

Arkanoid uses a special analog wheel device as a controlling device.

Note: at least in openMSX (0.6.3 at least), you can assign any button to any function. So, you could assign a button to F2, to pause a Konami game, e.g. Or assign a button to the reset button, to annoy yourself
