***** CAUTION: LONG BULLSHIT STORY *****

When you think of it, transferring raw tone/envelope data to other sound hardware...

With this little gang (Glodia/Telenet) it's kind of hard to figure out who did what.

For those who would find this interesting:

Very small example regarding differences...

Notice for instance how, with the PC-88 version of the titlesong, the drums get in earlier ?

If the (MSX version) titlesong roughly has this structure:

Intro
A
B
A
B
C (drums fall in at end)
A 2 (with drums)
B 2 (with drums)
C 2 (with drums)
A
B
End

The arrangement of the PC-88 differs.

It's actually a "chiptune" issue;
Construct songs which are tailor-made to fit the specifications of the sound chip.
(Good example: Ys series on MSX)

Anyway, when A & B get repeated in A2 & B2, the channel which before did the "echo" is traded in for the drums.

On PC-88 hardware, there were more possibilities regarding amount of channels 'n' stuff.

The use of drums is not influenced by the 3-channel limitation.
They're already used freely from the beginning of the song, but especially; they come in just before part C.

So those are quite interesting "arrangement issues", I think.

How would you, me, or anyone do it if there were no limitiations like these at all, but still want to stay true to the song's essention?

Hmm never did anything with testament, although I love the introsong and often play it on the piano...I might take a look at it

ps. anyone got the original MSX themes as mp3 or anything? I don't like working from the PC88 music, and I don't plan on playing through the game to get to the songs...

ps2. anyone got experience with this Hoot program, how to add music? I find lots of sets, for daiva, telenet games etc....but I don't know how to get Hoot to recognize em...

If you let the intro of Testament run, then following all that is some kinda cast demonstration which features a lots of tunes. If these are all the game's tunes then there's your BGM player.

Dunno, might look at the game's music some day.. not until newyear tho.

check this site:
www.hoot-archive.tk
you'll have to place the entire ZIP file in a folder..
for example, place a PC88 music set in the folder PC88
MSX in MSX etc etc GOT THAT?!

It's where the money is
I'll post an updated recording tomorrow or a day later, not sure when I have the time to continue on it...

Some nice progress already... some remarks tho:

* relax on the drums a bit, they are kinda uhh... distracting now (too much snares/breaks)
* the choir in the intro sounds a bit weird on the second chord; maybe it sounds better when you pick a higher chord in stead of a lower one?
* the first part of the melody (jazz guitar like instrument) feels a bit too fast due to all those arps (at 0:31 or 0:37 for instance)
* the main melody (at 0:55) is quite suitable for a second voice
* I like the string chords you added a lot, they could use some minor tweaking tho

Anyways, I'm curious about the final result! If only I could convince myself to unlazy and do some composing again as well...
